Blue Devils down Tommies behind wild third period

UW-Stout 5, St. Thomas 3

ST. PAUL (January 15, 2016) - The Blue Devil offense was once again in full force as they scored three goals in the third period to break a 2-2 tie and beat the Tommies 5-3. This was the second game in a row that Stout ending a game with five goals.

Stout (8-4-3, 2-4 WIAC) jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first period after an unassisted goal from Jake Useldinger at the 17:52 mark. Stout continued to fire on all cylinders in the second period. Gavin Smith scored his first collegiate goal, which came  from Tyler Cayemberg, just two minutes into the period. St. Thomas (8-6-2) responded with two goals to close out the second period, knotting the game at 2-2.

The third period was an even greater display of Blue Devil offense. Cayemberg scored mid way in the third period that came from Craig Lindegard and Useldinger. Less than two minutes later Tate Rusk then responded with an shorthanded, unassisted goal of his own, putting the Blue Devils up 4-2. The Tommies' Nick Nielsen made it an interesting game after an unassisted goal at the 12:43 mark to make the game 4-3, but Stout's Nolan Kirley was able to put St. Thomas away scoring an empty net goal in the final minute. Stout came out on top 5-3.

The Blue Devils will stay in Minnesota for a 7 p.m. game tomorrow January 16 against St. Mary's in Winnona. They then will return home next week for two consecutive games.
