Blue Devils take sweep over Superior, earn fifth seed in tourney

UW-Stout 10, UW-Superior 3 | UW-Stout 5, UW-Superior 4 (9 inn)

SUPERIOR (April 27, 2015) - UW-Stout ran away with the first game over UW-Superior, 10-3, then needed nine innings to down the Yellowjackets, 5-4, to earn the sweep Monday at Leibert Field. The wins pushed the Blue Devils into the fifth seed of the conference tournament this weekend.

The Blue Devils (15-23,7-9 WIAC) broke open a close first game. Heading into the seventh inning, Stout held a tight 5-3 lead, but broke out for five runs, then held off the Yellowjackets (16-18,2-14 WIAC) in the bottom of the seventh.

Beth Wood (Fr, Mineral Point) led off the seventh with a triple, then came home when Taylor Workman (Sr, Prior Lake, Minn) reached on an error. Nicole Rogers (Jr, Brooklyn Center, Minn), Heather Bol (So, Baldwin) and Karley Wiensch (Jr, Chippewa Falls) each drove in a run and Rogers stole home for the other run.

Pitcher Tori Workman (Jr, Prior Lake, Minn) seemed to have the bottom of the seventh in control, but after two outs, walked consecutive batters. Workman got the final out, and the win, by forcing a groundout to first base.

The two teams matched each other run-for-run over the first three innings, with both teams scoring single runs in the second and third innings.Stpit took the lead with a single run in the fourth inning on a bases loaded walk, then added another run in the sixth on an RBI single to center field by Lynzi Knudtson (Sr, Melrose).

The Yellowjackets sent the game into extra innings when Ciarra Taipale hit a two-shot home run to knot the game at four runs apiece.

The teams traded jabs in the eighth inning, with both teams getting a hit in their half of the inning, but both defenses got out of the inning.

Stout scored what would prove to be the winning punch in the top of the ninth. Rachel Thomas (Fr, Hastings, Minn) opened the inning with a double, then stole third. Following an out, Amber Herrick (Fr, Augusta), making her first start since the first weeks of the season, delivered a double to center field, easily scoring Thomas.

Workman walked the lead off batter, then basically took care of the next three batters on her own, snagging a line shot back to her, getting a strikeout looking and snaring a pop up to end the game.

Thomas finished the game 4-for-5 and Knudtson was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Workman started the game, went to the outfield, then returned to the circle after Superior's home run, and earned the win, giving up one earned run and notching four strikeouts. Workman also earned the win in the first game, fanning eight and giving up one earned run.

Thomas was 3-for-3 in game one with a pair of RBI, going 7-for-8 on the afternoon. Wood was 2-for-3 in the first contest.

Stout hosts Hamline University, Tuesday, April 28 at 4 p.m., then will head to Carson Park to participate in the WIAC Championship, facing UW-Whitewater, Friday, May 1 at noon.
