Photo GalleryMENOMONIE (April 27, 2015) - One was pretty, the other not so much, but the result was the same as UW-Stout lost both ends of a non-conference doubleheader to Gustavus Adolphus, 1-0, 13-2 in five innings, Sunday at Alumni Field.
Game one turned into a pitcher's dual between Stout's
Tori Workman and the Gusties Hannah Heacox. Heacox recorded the win with a nine-strikeout, two hit effort. Workman had nothing to hang her head about, scattering five hits, striking out four and allowing one earned run. Both pitchers allowed a walk.
The Gusties (28-14) got the only run of the game in the fifth innng when Jenna Willis doubled to the centerfield fence to lead off the inning. Heacox moved Willis to third on a sacrifice bunt, then came home on Rachel Malo's sacrifice fly.
Stout (13-23) did not have many opportunities, stranding two runners, while Gustavus stranded five.
Taylor Workman and
Liz Seipel picked up Stout's only hits in the game.
The second game, as we said earlier, was a different story. The tone was set early as Stout committed two errors in the first inning and would finish the game with five errors.
The Gusties scored in every inning, getting two runs in the first, three in the second, four in the third, one in the fourth and three in fifth.
Stout did answer Gustavus' two-run first inning to cut the lead to 2-1.
Tori Workman led off the game with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Lynzi Knudtson, took third on a passed ball, then came homeon Nicole Roger's slicer through the left side of the infield.
Stout got one more run in the fifth when
Beth Wood scored on an error.
Stout did have nine hits in the game, with
Tori Workman and Rogers each going 2-for-3. Gustavus went deep in their bench. Third baseman Jessica Williams was 3-for-3 with four RBI, three coming on a bases-loaded double in the fifth.
Stout will be at UW-Superior, Monday, April 27 at 2 p.m. to close out the conference season, then will host Hamline University, Tuesday, April 28 at 4 p.m. to conclude the home season. The Blue Devils will be at the WIAC Tournament, May 1-3 at UW-Eau Claire. Stout will be either the fifth or sixth seed, depending on the outcome Monday in Superior.
