Archived VideoMENOMONIE (April 25, 2015) - UW-Stout got solid hitting and a good one-two punch on the mound to take a 5-2 opening game win over UW-Oshkosh Saturday, but then gave up seven runs in the fifth inning and went on to lose game two, 10-5, at Nelson Field.
The Blue Devils (16-15, 4-12 WIAC) punched out 13 hits in game one, scattering single runs in the first, third, fourth, seventh and eight innings to capture the win. The Titans got their two runs in the fifth inning.
Hunter Dicus drove home a run in the first inning and
Nick Nalbach drove in
Brady Burzynski in the third inning. Stout took a 3-0 lead in the fourth when Austin Littman's sacrifice fly plated Dicus, who had reached on an infield single.
The Titans (18-14, 8-10 WIAC) cut the lead to one run with a two-run fifth inning. John Eagan's fielder's choice put the Titans on the board when Cooper Lange scored. Luke Gajewski's sacrifice fly made the score 3-2.
Nalbach gave Stout a 4-2 lead with a groundout in the seventh innng and Blue Devils got an insurance run in the eighth on pinch hitter
Kasey Kruse's double.
Hayden Bowe worked seven innings, giving up one earned run while allowing six hits.
Jacob Frederick worked the final two innings to get the save.
In the second game, Stout built a 5-0 lead, piling up four runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead into the fifth inning. Stout opened the scoring with a single run in the third inning when Nalbach single scored Burzynski, who had stolen second after a lead-off single. The Blue Devils built up a 5-0 lead inthe fourth inning on a two-run double by
Jack Schneider and a two run single by Nalbach.
The Titans then parlayed a costly two-out error into seven runs in the fifth inning and Stout never recovered, committing four errors in the inning. Tyler Kozlowski had a two run double, and Eagan, Gajewski, Andy Brahier, Luke Reckert and Jack Paulson each had RBIs.
Stout left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh and Oshkosh put together a three-run eighth inning, as Stout committed two errors in the inning. Gajewski, Brahier, Rckert and Paulson each had two hits for the Titans. Jacob Pohlman pitched three innings of shutout relief to earn the win.
Nalbach had a strong day at the plate for the Blue Devils, driving in two runs in game one, then going 3-for-5 with three RBI in game two.
The two teams will meet again Sunday, April 26 at noon.
