Archived VideoMENOMONIEÂ (April 18, 2015) - UW-Stout scored five runs in the first inning of the opener on their way to a 6-2 win and
Abbey Ball picked up the win in long relief and scored what would prove to be the game-winning run as the Blue Devils swept the series with UW-Stevens Point with a 2-1 second game win Saturday at Alumni Field.
Stout (12-18, 4-6 WIAC) jumped on the Pointers early in the opener. After putting the Pointers (11-20, 1-7 WIAC) down in order in the first inning, Stout unleashed a three-hit, five run first inning.
Stout took advantage of two lead off walks and a hit batter to load the bases after three batters.
Rachel Thomas delivered a one out infield single to score a run.
Beth Wood pounded a two-run double to center field and the Blue Devils led 3-0.
Liz Seipel put down a sacrifice run to score a run and
Nicole Rogers ripped a bullet up the middle for the final run of the inning and Stout led 5-0.
The Pointers cut into the lead with a single run in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Paige Allen. The Pointers threatened in the fifth inning, but left runners on second and third as
Tori Workman struck out the final batter of the inning. Stevens Point made it 5-2 in the sixth when Jordon Schreiner hit a no-doubt home run to right field.
Stout added an insurance run in their half of the sixth inning. Seipel singled to left field with one out, then stole second and third before being plated by
Heather Bol's groundout to first base.
Beth Wood worked the final two outs of the game, getting the final out to fly out to centerfield.
The Pointers drew first blood in the second game, chasing starter
Beth Wood after Jodi Vanderford walked with the bases loaded to force in what would be Stevens Point's only run of the contest.
Ball came on and the freshman would strike out three in 5.1 innings pitched, but she would have to work out of a couple jams in the fifth, and sixth innings where the Pointers stranded one in each inning.
Stout got the single run back in the second inning to make Ball the pitcher of record.
Taylor Workman opened the inning with a single up the middle.
Kim Jablonski came on to run for Workman, and moved to second on Ball's ground out.
Heather Bol's single brought Jablonski home to tie the score.
Stout got the winning run in the fourth inning. Ball opened the inning by drawing a walk, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Seipel layed down a bunt and beat out, allowing Ball to go to third. Seipel then hung herself out and got caught up in a hot box, allowing Ball to score, who beat the throw home.
Tori Workman came on to close out the game in the seventh inning, allowing won single, but recording two strikeouts, including the third out of the inning to end the game.
Ball allowed only one hit in the contest, struck out three and walked two. Wood allowed a hit as did Workman, who recorded the save.
Stout out-hit the Pointers 5-3 in game one and 7-3 in game two. Seipel was 2-for-3 in the second game and was the only Stout batter to have multiple hits in either game.
Workman chalked up the win in the first game, striking out four and walking four. she surrendered three hits and both earned runs. Workman recorded two strikeouts in the second game. Wood allowed no hits in the first game.
The Blue Devils are scheduled to host UW-Oshkosh, Sunday, April 19 at noon.
