Archived VideoMENOMONIE (April 15, 2015) - For the second time in a week, UW-Platteville swept UW-Stout at Nelson Field, this time coming back to take a 2-1 10-inning first game win, then capping off the day with a 4-1 second game win Wednesday.
The Pioneers (17-7, 8-0 WIAC), which stayed in first place in the WIAC with the wins, frustrated the Blue Devils (13-10, 1-7 WIAC) again.
Stout took a 1-0 lead into the ninth innings, only to see the Pioneers take advantage of a Blue Devils error to tie the game. Stout got a runner on the bottom of the ninth, but was thrown out trying to steal.
The Pioneers captilized on Blue Devil errors in the 10th inning when Tanner Galeazzi reached on an error with one out, and moved on to second. Galeazzi scored, barely, when Evan Greco singled to right field Galeazzi slipped while coming down the third base path an literally crawled to the plate.
Stout's
Jack Schneider led off the 10th inning with a single, then, following an out, was thrown out on a double play to end the game.
Hayden Bowe went the distance in the game and was saddled with his second loss of the season, both coming at the hands of the Pioneers. Bowe scattered six hits, struck out one, walked two and allowed one earned run.
Nathan Fry got the win for the Pioneers, pitching nine innings and giving up 10 hits, but striking out five. Stout's only run of the game came in te fifth inning when
Nick Nalbach reached on a two double in the fifth inning, then scored when
Jake Lunow reached on an error.
The Pioneers took control of the second game with a three run second inning. Jonny Frese pounded out a two-run double, then came home on Collin Deboer's single to center.
Stout scored their only run of the game in the sixth inning when
Charlie Meyer's infield single brought home
Hunter Dicus, who reached on a single, then moved to third on
Ryan Connor's double to center field.
The Pioneers added a run in the eighth inning.
Nalbach extended his hitting streak to 14 games, going 3-for-5 in the opener and 1-for-5 in the second game. Dicus stretched his hitting streak to 11 games, going 2-for-4 in game one, 1-for-3 in game two.
Jack Schneider was 3-for-5 in the opener and 2-for-5 in the second contest. Connor was 2-for-4 in game two.
Stout will be at UW-La Crosse, Saturday, April 18 and Sunday, April 19. They will be at UW-Superior, Tuesday, April 21.
