Blue Devils run into a hot pitcher, fall to Johns Hopkins, 5-2

Johns Hopkins University 5, UW-Stout 2

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 20, 2015) - UW-Stout had a difficult time solving Johns Hopkins University pitcher Carter Burns. The Blue Jays hurler held the Blue Devils to two runs on five hits and 11 strikeouts in a 5-2 Blue Jay win Friday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Baseball Classic.

The loss put an end to Stout's winning streak at six games.

Zach Carlson (So, Indian Head Park, Ill) surrendered 10 hits, but allowed only three runs, two earned, before exiting after the seventh inning. Carlson walked only one and struck out two.

The Blue Jays (8-2), who are receiving votes in the latest ABCA top 30 poll, got to Carlson in the first inning, tallying two runs, one earned, to take a 2-0 lead.

Stout (7-2) tied the game at 2-2 in the sixth inning when Charlie Meyer (Sr, Janesville) laced a triple to center field, scoring both Jack Schneider (Sr, Minneapolis, Minn) and Brady Burzynski (Jr, Eau Claire), who both got on base with back-to-back one-out singles.

Johns Hopkins took the lead back for good with a run in the bottom of the sixth. Stout got no more runners past second base the rest of the way. The Blue Jays put up two more runs in the bottom of the eighth.

The Blue Devils will close out their spring break trip when they face Lasell College, Saturday, March 21 at 9 a.m.
