Bethel University 8, UW-Stout 3ROSEMOUNT, Minn. (February 21, 2015) -
Tori Workman (Jr, Prior Lake, Minn) struck out seven and UW-Stout used a five run sixth inning to finish off Bethel University, in a 7-1 first game win over the Royals Saturday at the Irish Sports Dome in a midnight classic. Bethel came back to take the second game, 8-3.
With the first pitch of the first game slated for 11 p.m. and the outdoor temperature at minus-two degrees, the contests were sure to be for the hardy fan who stuck around until the doubleheader concluded at approximately 3:15 a.m.
In the opener, Stout (1-3) scored two runs in the first inning when Workman led off with an outfield single, then stole second. Lynzi Knutdson (Sr, Melrose) singled and advanced to second, while Workman went to third, setting the stage for
Shelby Weiske (Fr, Woodville), who doubled both players home with a shot to right field.
The Royals (1-1) tagged Workman for their only run of the game in the top of the second, an unearned run that was scored on an error.
Both teams went scoreless until Stout exploded for five runs in the sixth inning.
Sara Griesbach (Jr, Stratford) and
Heather Boll (So, Baldwin) drove in runs,
Amber Herrick (Fr, Augusta( scored on a passed ball and two runners scored on an error to make it a 7-1 game. Bethel went down in order in the top of the seventh.
Workman struck out seven and gave up three hits, but walked five. Stout's defense only allowed the one unearned run ann stranded seven Royal base runners. Stout committed three errors in the contest.
The Blue Devils recorded eight hits, with Workman and Knudtson each getting two hits in three at-bats.
Stout took the lead in the nightcap (actually, the morningcap in this case), when Bol drove in two runs in the top of the first with a double to center field.
This time, the Royals had an answer, scoring two runs in the bottom of the inning. then going ahead with a two-run second inning.

Bethel used a four-run third to put the game on ice. The Royals smacked out 12 runs in the contest, while Stout belted out seven. Abbie Bichard was 2-for-3 with three RBI for Bethel, Jessica Brown was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI for the Royals.
Tori Workman and Bol each had two hits to lead Stout.
Stout returns to action, and to the Irish Sports Dome, Friday, Feb. 27 when they face St. Olaf College at 8:30 p.m.
