MENOMONIE (February 13, 2015) - UW-Stout simply ran out of time and fell 3-2 to sixth ranked UW-River Falls Friday at the Fanetti Community Center. But the Blue Devils did make the final minute of the game interesting.
Trailing 3-1, Stout (8-13-1, 3-6-0 WIAC) pulled goalie
Spencer Viele (So, Wildwood, Mo) to put an extra attacker on the ice with just over a minute remaining. The Blue Devils kept the pressure on, keeping the puck in the River Falls zone. After a flurry of acitivity in front of the Falcons' net, River Falls was called for delay of game when a defenseman was laying on the puck, resulting in a penalty shot with 47 seconds left in the game.
The Blue Devils' leading scorer
Justin Moody (So, Grand Forks, ND) got the call and made the charge but his backhanded shot was just wide as Falcons' goalie Tanner Milliron got just enough stick on the puck to reject the shot.
Moody did get redemption seconds later when the picked up the loose change in a mass of bodies and buried the puck to pull Stout to within one goal with 17 seconds remaining.
Derek Sand (So, West Fargo, ND) and
Jake Useldinger (Jr, East Grand Forks, Minn) recorded the assists. But the Blue Devils were unable to get off another shot in the waning seconds.
The Falcons (17-4-1, 6-3-0 WIAC) scored first in this game and it looked like they would score often, getting two goals in just over a minute in the first period. Christian George scored at 6:40 and Ryan Doner scored on the power play at 7:45 to give the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
Moody cut the score in half six minutes later, scoring unassisted at 13:48 of the first period.
After a scoreless second period and much of the third period, Doner scored his second goal of the night at 14:45 to give the Falcons a 3-1 lead.
Viele finished the night with 33 saves, while Milliron made 31 saves for the Falcons.
The two teams will meet again Saturday, Feb. 14 at 7:30 p.m. in Menomonie.
