Archived VideoMENOMONIE (December 12, 2015) - UW-Stout appeared to be coasting to a win over St. Olaf College Saturday when the Oles came to life to make a game of it before the Blue Devils put the contest into the win column with a 5-3 win at the Fanetti Community Center.
The Oles weren't putting up much of a fight early as Stout ran out to a 3-0 lead. But St. Olaf (2-8-3) started punching the Blue Devils (6-4-2) in the nose tallying three goals and pulled to within one goal late in the game.
Shayne McLaughlin (Jr, Eau Claire) got Stout off to a good start, scoring at 18:48 of the first, with assists by
Tyler Cayemberg (Jr, East Troy) and
Joe Anderson (Fr, Side Lake, Minn). McLaughlin put the Blue Devil on the board again at 6:11 of the second period, with assists by Cayemberg and
Joe Kleven (Fr, Shakopee, Minn).
Only 15 seconds later,
Nolan Kirley (Jr, Hayward) scored his first goal of the season on assists by
Danny Ray (Sr, Grand Forks, ND) and Jon Plasccz (Fr, Apple Valley, Minn).
The third period would belong to the Oles, but Stout provided enough to grab the win.
Andy Jordahl got St. Olaf on the board at 7:28, but Stout's
Justin Moody (Jr, Grand Forks, ND) gave Stout a 4-1 lead at 10:31, with assists by
Jake Useldinger (Sr, East Grand Forks, Minn) and
Riley Colvard (Jr, Centerville, Minn).
St. Olaf took advantage of the power play - Stout would fight off three other power play chances in the game - when David Rath score to make it 4-2 at 12:33. With an extra attacker on the ice, Patrick Sivets scored, with an assist by Menomonie native Drew Otto, at 17:30 to pull to within 4-3.
Joe Anderson would get a break away with an empty net in front of his at 18:27 and the freshman did not disappoint, recording his second goal of the season.
Nick Schmit (Fr, Fargo, ND) recorded his second win in as many nights, turning away 22 shots. His counterpart, Luke Andriuk recorded 28 saves. The Oles were 1-for-4 on the power play, while Stout was 0-1.
Stout is off until Friday, Jan. 8 when they host Hamline University at 7:30 p.m.
