Archived VideoMENOMONIE (December 11, 2015) - After allowing a first period goal,
Nick Schmit settled into the starting role and notched his first career win as UW-Stout defeated Concordia-Moorhead, 3-1, Friday at the Fanetti Community Center.
Schmit, a freshman from Fargo, ND, making his first collegiate start, recorded 35 saves on his way to stopping everything Concordia threw at him after allowing a rebounded goal at 8:28 of the first period.
Schmit stopped eight shots in the first period, 16 in the second and 11 in the first in his first extended action of the season.
The Blue Devils (5-4-2) tied the score early in the second period when
Karl Andersen scored at 3:21 as the teams were on a 4-on-4. Andersen got assists from
Tyler Cayemberg (Jr, East Troy) and
Danny Ray (Sr, Grand Forks, ND)
Cayemberg would net the eventual game winner, and that shot came with a Blue Devil in the box. Cayemberg recorded Stout's second shorthanded goal of the season when he took a short pass from
Joe Kleven (Fr, Shakopee, Minn) and shot in the slot over the left leg of Cobbers' goalie Alex Reichle at 2:22 of the third period.
The Blue Devils put the Cobbers (5-4-0) away with 17 seconds left in the game when Kleven hit a streaking
Austin Nelson (So, Hastings, Minn) on the bench side of the ice and Nelson hit the open net.
Concordia outshot Stout 36-29. Schmit recorded 35 saves, while the Cobbers' Reichle had 26.
Stout will wrap up first semester play when they host St. Olaf College, Saturday, Dec. 12 at 7:30 p.m.
