Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Gustavus takes big lead in third period, take 72-67 win

Gustavus Adolphus College 72, UW-Stout 67 (Box Score)

ST. PETER, Minn (November 20, 2015) - Gustavus Adolphus College outscored UW-Stout by 11 points in the third quarter to take a big lead before the Blue Devils made a charge but couldn't get close enough and the Gusties downed Stout, 72-67 in the first game of the Gustavus Adolphus Classic Friday.

Holding a two-point 29-27 halftime lead, the Gusties (2-0) shot out of the locker room with a 28-17 push in the third quarter. But to the young Blue Devils' credit, they pulled to within five points several times in the fourth quarter, but that was as close as they could get.

Layups by Kyleigh Hebert (Sr, Spencer), Danielle Adams (Jr, Byron, Minn) and Stephanie Kastens (Sr, Wausau) chipped a 16 point deficit to 10 points midway through the period. The Blue Devils (0-2) got the score to five points on a hoop and the harm by Hebert with 22 seconds remaining.

Jenna Goldsmith (Jr, St. Anthony, Minn) and Kyncaide Diedrich (Fr, Athens) each scored 10 points to lead Stout. The Gusties had three players in double digits and two that scored 20 or more points. Mikayla Miller led all scorers with 23 points and Lindsey Johnson tossed in 20 points. Miranda Rice added 13 points.

The Blue Devils' bench outscored the Gusties bench, 42-10, with Kastens and Shannan Watkins (Fr, Hoover, Ala) each scoring nine points, a career best for Kastens.

Stout will play Simpson College, Saturday, Nov. 21 at 1 p.m.
