UW-Stout 3, Finlandia University 3 (OT)
HANCOCK, Mich. (October 30, 2015) - UW-Stout outshot Finlandia University by more than a two to one advantage, but had to come from behind to take a 3-3 tie with the Lions Friday in the season opener for both teams.
The Blue Devils (0-0-1) outshot Finlandia (0-0-1) by a 42-19 margin, but freshman
Christian Salvato (Fr, La Verne, Calif) answered a Lions' goal midway through the third period to knot the score up.
After a scoreless first period, the Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead on second period goals by Travis Cornwell at 14:19 and Francis Cote at 18:52.
The Blue Devils came to life in the third period, in particular senior
Jake Useldinger (Sr, East Grand Forks, Minn). Useldinger scored 39 seconds into the third period while on the power play, then tied the score with a shorthanded goal at the 7:31 mark.
Finlandia took the lead back two minutes later when Thomas Malkmus scored at 9:07 while on the power play.
It took Stout only 36 seconds to knot the score when Salvato scored his first collegiate goal, assisted by
Dylan Zins (Fr, Prior Lake, Minn) and
Riley Colvard (Jr, Centerville, Minn). For Colvard, it was his second assist of the game.
Chase Hollander (Jr, Random Lake) recorded 16 saves, while the Lions' Andrew Brownlee recorded 39.
The Blue Devils will be at St. Scholastica, Saturday, Oct. 31 for a 4 p.m. matinee contest.
