Nelson scores hat trick, Anderson nets two as Stout downs Aurora

MENOMONIE (January 23, 2015) - Austin Nelson (Fr, Hastings, Minn) scored the hat trick - his first three collegiate goals - and Karl Andersen (So, River Falls) added two first period goals as UW-Stout rolled over Aurora University, 7-2, Friday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

With the Blue Devils (6-9-2) leading 4-0 midway through the second period, Nelson scored his first career goal at 8:17, getting assists from Justin Moody and Derek Sand. Nelson snagged his second collegiate goal at 3:58 of the third stanza, with assists by Joey Haydock and Danny Ray to make the score 6-1. Nelson got the final goal of the evening, scoring at 18:15, with an assist from Jake Useldinger.

Nelson's hat trick was not only the first of the season for the Blue Devils, but Stout's first hat trick since the 2011-12 season when Branden Gay executed the feat Dec. 2, 2011 against St. Scholastica.

The Blue Devils got on the board early and often against Aurora, which is in its first year of NCAA play. Joey Haydock (So, Junction City) scored at 7:15 of the first period and Andersen scored his first goal of the season only 14 seconds later to give Stout a 2-0 lead. Andersen made it 3-0 at 12:02 of the first period, taking the rebound shot and back-handing it into the the net.

Senior captain Jordan Tredinnick (Onalaska) made it 4-0 before the end of the first period.

The Spartans (1-14-1) broke up the shuout in the second period when Connor Quinn scored at 11:57. Aurora picked up their final goal with three minutes left in the game.

The teams matched each other, with both teams putting 30 shots on net. Chase Hollander (So, Random Lake) snagged his third win in his last three outings, stopping 28 shots. The Spartans' Griffin Strain recorded 23 saves.

The two teams will spar again Saturday, Jan. 24 in a 4 p.m. matinee contest at the Dunn County Ice Arena.
