UW-Stout holds off River Falls, take 57-55 win over Falcons

MENOMONIE  (January 21, 2015) - UW-Stout held off a UW-River Falls squad that was determined to stretch their winning streak to four games as the Blue Devils scored a two-point, 57-55, win over the Falcons Wednesday at Johnson Fieldhouse.

Stout (5-12, 3-5 WIAC) overcame a deficit early in the first half to carry a 34-28 lead into the locker room. The Falcons came out of the locker room on a 7-2 run to take the lead at 16:12 of the second half. The teams traded leads for the next six minutes and the lead was never more than two points by Stout until the Blue Devils broke the 10th tie of the game at 6:05 on a layup by Jenna Goldsmith (So, St. Anthony, Minn).

A three-point play by Kyleigh Hebert (Jr, Spencer0 and a bucket by Brea Boomer (Sr, Grand Portage, Minn) gave Stout a 55-48 lead with 5:18 remaining on the clock. Goldsmith and Boomer would both foul out and the Falcons shaved away at the lead, tying the game at 55-55 at 1:55 on Kate Theisen's free throw.

Stout took the lead for good on Katelynne Folkers (Sr, Fall Creek) drive to the hoop with 57 seconds remaining. The Falcons missed a pair of shots and Folkers pulled down a key rebound, setting up a 3-point shot by Sarah Schoch (So, Chippewa Falls)  that stayed on the back of the rim with 10 seconds remaining. Following a timeout, the Falcons missed two shots underneath and the Blue Devils escaped with the win.

Stout broke a four-game losing streak with the victory and the Falcons' three-game winning streak came to an end.

The game was a rough-and-tumble game with both teams getting whistled for 21 fouls. The Falcons drained 21-of-26 charity shots, while Stout hit on 13-of-23.

The Falcons held a huge advantage off the glass, pulling down 54 rebounds to Stout's 31. Theisen had 12 rebounds to go with her gamTaylor Karge had 10 points.

The Blue Devils got a double-double from Folkers, who collected 12 rebounds and 10 points. Hebert matched Theisen's 13 points and added four assists and thre steals. Boomer finished the night with 11 points.

Stout will travel to UW-Platteville, Saturday, Jan. 24 for a 7 p.m. contest, then return home Wednesday, Jan. 28 to host UW-Eau Claire at 7 p.m.
