Softball season comes to end with loss to UW-La Crosse in WIAC tourney

MENOMONIE (May 4, 2014) - UW-Stout's trip through the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship came to an end when the host Blue Devils lost, 3-0, to UW-La Crosse Sunday at Alumni Field.

The Blue Devils (27-12) couldn't get their offense in gear, tallying six hits. Courtney Smith (So, Dassel, Minn) had her best collegiate day at the plate, going 3-for-3, but was stranded each time. Stout left eight runners on base.

The Eagles got two runs in the third inning when Alecia Faber lifted a sacrifice fly that scored Kallie Krech and Emily Holdorf came home on the same play when the relay throw was muffed.

Stout's best chance to score came in the sixth inning. Taylor Workman (Jr, Prior Lake, Minn) cracked a double to left field. Tori Workman (So, Prior Lake, Minn) came on to pinch run. Workman was thrown out at the plate when she attempted to score after a deep infield error.

The Eagles tacked on a run in the seventh when designated player Megan Nelson drove in a run.

The Eagles finished with eight hits, with Faber and Krech each collecting two. The win advanced the Eagles to the championship game where they forced tournament undefeated UW-Whitewater to a second championship game, before falling 5-1. Whitewater earned the NCAA automatic bid. The Warhawks were the only WIAC school to advance to the tournament. NCAA bids were announced early Monday, May 5.
