Pitchers step up in WIAC tournament, but Stout splits the day

 | UW-Stout 5, UW-Oshkosh 4 | UW-Whitewater 3, UW-Stout 2 (9 inn) | WIAC Championship Website

MENOMONIE (May 3, 2014) - Without their ace pitcher in the line-up, UW-Stout split a pair of one-run games on the second day of the WIAC Softball Championship at Alumni Field in Menomonie. The Blue Devils defeated UW-Oshkosh, 5-4, in the first game of the day, then lost to UW-Whitewater, 3-2 in nine innings in the final game of the day.

Stout will have to work their way through the loser's bracket to win the championship and will face UW-La Crosse at 10 a.m., Sunday, May 4.

Blue Devil pitcher Tori Workman (So, Prior Lake, Minn), who had thrown 176 innings this season and had set the school strikeout record the day before, was injured during pregame warmups, and was unable to pitch.

The Blue Devils' Nicole Rogers (So, Brooklyn Center, Minn) and Sara Mueller (So, Faribault, Minn) went to the circle, with Mueller, who had thrown only 2.0 innings so far this year getting the win by throwing 4.2 innings with three strikeouts.

Kaitlyn Stark (So, Hastings, Minn) led off Stout's first with a solo home run and Stout got two more runs in the second. The Titans scored four in the third inning. Stout scored two unearned runs in the fourth for the win.

Against the Warhawks, freshman Caty Schloer went the distance. With the score tied at one apiece heading into the eighth, Stout's Sam Hastings (Sr, Waukesha) hit a solo homerun. But the Warhawks countered in the bottom of the inning. Kelly McGrail doubled, advanced to third on a ground out and tied the score when she came home on a wild pitch.

The Warhawks took the game when Paige Evangelist hit a lead off home run in the bottom of the ninth.

Warhawk pitcher Bekka Houda was dealing in this game, racking pu 14 strikeouts in pitching all nine innings, surrendering seven hits. Stout stranded eight runners. Stout's Caty Schloer went the distance, striking out three and giving up nine hits.
