MENOMONIE (May 2, 2014) -
Tori Workman (So, Prior Lake, Minn) set the UW-Stout single season strikeout record and she did with a flair as the Blue Devils defeated UW-Platteville, 1-0, in the opening game of the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship Friday at Alunni Field.
The only run of the game came in the bottom of the third as the Blue Devils manufactured a run.
Kaitlin Stark (So, Hastings, Minn) reached on a one-out error, landing on second base.
Lynzi Knudtson (Sr, Melrose) bunted Stark to third. A single to left field by
Sam Hastings (Sr, Waukesha) plated Stark for the winning run.
Needing seven strikeouts to break the school record, Workman got exactly that, ending the game on a strikeout. She finished the game allowing only two hits and walked none. No Platteville runners made it past second base.Workman now has 160 strikeouts, surpassing the make of 159 by Jenni Bostrom in 2001.
The Blue Devils will play UW-Oshkosh in the 10 a.m. game of the tournament, Saturday, May 3.
