Softball team posts sweep over UW-Eau Claire, 8-6, 8-4

EAU CLAIRE (April 9, 2014) - Clutch hits by a pair of seniors powered a five-run ninth inning to give UW-Stout their first regular season sweep over UW-Eau Claire since the 2003 season. The Blue Devils defeated the Blugolds, 8-6, 8-4, Wednesday at Bollinger Field.

Tied at 3-3 heading into the ninth inning, Hannah Sweet hit a two-run home run to center field to put Stout up 4-3, then Sam Hastings cleared the bases with a three-run double to give Stout an 8-3 lead. The  Blugolds scored on a two-out double in the bottom of the ninth, but reigning WIAC pitcher of the week Tori Workman forced a fly out for the final out.

The game almost didn't get to extra innings, but Sweet proved the hero in regulation when her two-out single up the middle drove in Workman to tie the score at 3-3.

Hastings hit a solo home run in the first inning and Nicole Rogers hit a solo home run to lead off the second inning to give Stout a 2-0 lead. The Blugolds cut the lead in half in the bottom of the second with a single run, then took the lead with two runs in the third inning.

Workman came on in the third third inning and pitched 6.2 innings, striking out five to earn the win.

In the opener, stout an early 3-0 lead. Taylor Workman drove in a run in the first inning and Kaitlin Stark smashed a two run home run in the second inning. Eau Claire tied the scored in the bottom of the second on a two-run single by Leah Wolff and a ground out RBI by Amanda Fischer.

Stout recaptured the lead in the third inning when Jessica Behnke pushed out a two-run double, then scored on an error. Eau Claire would not go away, pulling two within one in the bottom of the third. Deanna Gilane hit a solo home run and Kenzie Winning drove in two with a left field double. Eau Claire tied the score at 6-6 on a solo home run by Winning in the fifth.

The Blue Devils took advantage of Eau Claire miscues to get two runs in the sixth. With two outs, Rogers drew a bases loaded walk to bring in a run and Hastings scored on a wild pitch. Eau Claire left a runner stranded in both the sixth and seventh innings.

Tori Workman went the full seven innings, scattering 10 hits and giving up six earned runs, striking out three.

Stout last defeated Eau Claire twice on the same day at the 2005 conference tournament to win the tournament title. Stout last defeated Eau Claire in conference play April 23, 2003.

Stout is scheduled to host the University of Northwestern, Thursday, April 10 at 5 p.m., then will be at UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, April 12 before returning home Sunday, April 13 to host UW-Superior at noon.
