Softball team knocks off Whitewater to earn split with Warhawks

WHITEWATER (April 6, 2014) - UW-Stout scored two runs in the top of the seventh to break a 4-4 tie and went on to take a 6-4 win over UW-Whitewater and earn a split with the Warhawks Sunday at van Steenderen Field. The Warhawks won the first comtest, 2-1.

The Blue Devils (14-10, 3-1 WIAC) had to battle back in the second game after giving up a three-run home run to the Warhawks' Jo Jablonski in the opening inning. Stout came back with an unearned run in the top of the second, but Whitewater took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the inning on a leadoff solo home run by Paige Evangelista. Tori Workman (So, Prior Lake, Minn) came on in relief and shut the Warhawks down the rest of the way, striking out six and scattering three hits.

The Stout offense slowly creeped their way back in to the game, getting single runs in each of the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. kari Kolle (So, Eau Claire) drove in a run in the fourth, Nicole Rogers (So, Brooklyn Center, Minn) smacked in a run in the fifth and Kaitlin Stark (So, Hastings, Minn) doubled in a run in the sixth to tie the game.

Stout put it together in the seventh, manufacturing the two runs. Taylor Workman (Jr, Prior Lake, Minn) opened up with a single up the middle. Tori Workman moved pinch runner Gabby Gawreluk to second on a bunt, then moved to third on an erro. Rogers notched her second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly, scoring Gawreluk.Heather Bol (Fr, Woodville) moved Tori Workman from second to third on a ground out and Kolle recorded her second RBI of the contest with a drive down the first base line.

Toii Workman shut down the Warhawks (12-3, 1-1 WIAC) in order in the bottom of the seventh and Stout earned their first win over the Warhawks since a 3-1 win May 1, 2005.

In the opener, the Warhawks scored two runs in the second inning and held on for the win. Stout's only run came in the fifth on a solo home run by Stark.

Stout will be at UW-Eau Claire, Wednesday, April 9, then are scheduled to be home Thursday, April 10 to host the University of Northwestern. Stout will be at UW-Oshkosh, Saturday, April 12 and host UW-Superior, Sunday, April 13.
