Softball team completes sweep over UW-Stevens Point

MAUSTON (April 5, 2014) - UW-Stout got good hitting, good pitching, good defense and good base running and that translated into a 6-0, 5-1 sweep over UW-Stevens Point Saturday at Woodside Sports Complex.

The Blue Devils (13-9, 2-0 WIAC) got a five-run third inning in the opener, then tallied three runs in the top of the first of the second to record the sweep.

Sam Hastings (Sr, Waukesha) singled down the left field line to drive in two runs in the third inning of the opener. Taylor Workman (Jr, Prior Lake, Minn) singled up the middle for a run and two scored on Nicole Rogers (So, Brooklyn Center, Minn)  infield single. Stout got a single run in the fifth inning when Lynzi Knudtson (Jr, Melrose) stole home on a double steal.

Tori Workman (So, Prior Lake, Minn) went six innings for the win, giving up two hits and striking out eight. Knudtson was 3-for-3 with two runs scored. Hastings was 2-for-3 with two RBI.

In game two, the Blue Devils got all they would really need in the first inning. A double by Haastings drove in Knudtson to open the scoring. Rogers smashed out a two-run triple to give Stout a 3-0 lead. The Blue Devils added to the lead when Knudtson bunted in a run in the second inning and Heather Bol (Fr, Baldwin) drive in a run in the third.

The Pointers (9-12, 0-4 WIAC) got their only run of the day in the fifth inning and chased Stout starter Caty Schloer (Fr, Lino Lakes, Minn). Workman came on in relief of Schloer.

Schloer got the win, scattering four hits and one earned run. Taylor Workman was 2-for-3. Rogers was 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Stout will be at UW-Whitewater, Sunday, April 6 and at UW-Eau Claire, Wednesday, April 9.
