MENOMONIE (February 8, 2014) - UW-Stout shut the door on top ranked offense in the country for much of the contest and went on to a 4-2 win over UW-Stevens Point Saturday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.
The Pointers (16-3-2, 4-3-1 WIAC) came into the game averaging a nation-best 5.25 goals per game, and they showed it the night before taking Stout, 6-2.
But it was a different story Saturday night as Stout's
Chase Hollander (Fr, Random Lake) and the Blue Devil defense slammed the door on Pointers for the first two periods and carried a 3-0 lead into the third period. The Pointers scored five minutes into the period, but Stout's
Joey Haydock (Fr, Junction City) gave Stout a 4-1 lead. The Pointers added another goal with less than three minutes to play on a 3-on-4 opportunity.
Stout got things going in the first period when
Zach Vierling (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn) scored as he went through the middle of the Pointer defense at 10:10 of the opening period.Â
Tyler Cayemberg (Fr, East Troy) put home a rebounded shot by
Casey Kirley (Sr, Hayward) at 3:51 of the second period.
Derek Sand (Fr, West Fargo, N. Dak) scored at 6:53 of the second period to give Stout a 3-1 lead.
Evan Dixon got the Pointers on the board at 5:25 of the third period, but Haydock got that goal back at 10:46. Kevin Gibson scored at 17:35 on the power play for the final score.
Hollander recorded 37 saves to give Stout their second win over the Pointers this season. Brandon Jaeger finished with 28 saves.
Stout will be at UW-River Falls, Feb. 14-15
