THIS WEEK'S GAME: The Blue Devils (6-13-0, 2-4-0 WIAC) will host their second top 10 team in a week when they host
UW-Stevens Point (15-2-2, 3-2-1 WIAC), Friday, Feb. 7 and Saturday, Feb. 8 with start time at 7:30 p.m. both nights. The Pointers are the top scoring team in the country among all three men's NCAA divisions. The Pointers are ranked third in the latest USHCO.com Division III poll..

THE 2013-14 BLUE DEVILS (6-13-0, 2-4-0 WIAC): Kevin O'Donnell leads Stout with nine goals and nine assists.
Zach Vierling is second on the team in scoring with six goals and eight assists.
Jordan Tredinnick has six goals and seven assists, while
Danny Ray has four goals and six assists.
Matt Millis has four goals and four assists, while team captain
Logan Maly has three goals and six assists.
Tyler Cayemberg and Joe Haydock each have a pair of goals and four assists. Twenty different Blue Devils have scored at least one point, while 15 have scored at least one goal, and 19 have scored at least one assist.
Corey Koop has spent the most time in the net, posting a 3.34 goals against average and a saves percentage of .910. His 59 saves against nationally ranked UW-Stevens Point in December was the most by a Stout goalie in more than 10 years in a single game. As a team, Stout is being outscored, 64-48 (3.4-2.5). Stout has lost five games by one goal and has won five games by one goal. |

STOUT'S LAST TIME OUT: The Blue Devils were shut out, 4-0, by seventh ranked UW-Eau Claire, Jan.31, then lost to the Blugolds, 3-1, the next night.
Chase Hollander came into the Jan. 31 game early in the second period, surrendering only one goal the rest of the way, earning his first collegiate start the next night.

LAST TIME THEY MET: The Blue Devils played perhaps their best game of the season - and it came when
Terry Watkins coached his 700th collegiate game. Stout handed the Pointers their first loss of the season as they scored three consecutive goals and
Corey Koop recorded 59 saves to give Stout a 3-2 win in Stevens Point, Dec. 7. The Pointers, who would go on to outshoot Stout 61-17, opened the scoring when Nic D'Avollo scored at 6:30 in the first period.
Kevin O'Donnell tied the score for Stout ( at 14:07 in the second, but it was the third period that Stout pulled ahead.
Hunter Scott scored a power play goal at 9:04 in the third period and
Zach Vierling followed that up at 11:43. The Pointers pulled to within one goal when Joel Kalisz scored on a power play goal with just over two minutes left. Koop held off the Pointers in the waning seconds. |

Zach Vierling has become the Blue Devils' leading scorer over the last seven games. The junior forward has lit the lamp four times and added five assists, scoring at least one assist in five of the last seven games.. Junior defender/forward

SUCCESSFUL DEBUT: Freshman goalkeeper
Chase Hollander made a successful debut Saturday, Jan. 25, when he kept St. John's off the scoreboard for the more than 31 minutes he played. Hollander got the call with the Blue Devils trailing 4-1 midway through the second period, then stuffed the Johnnies with nine saves in the second and 12 saves in the third. Hollander's imitation of a brick wall allowed Stout to climb back into the game with two third period goals. Hollander was pulled with 34 seconds remaining to put an extra attacker on the ice.
LENDING A HAND: When goalie
Corey Koop was awarded an assist on Nov. 23 against St. Norbert, it was the first time a Stout goalie had earned an assist since Jake Schuman picked up an assist against Lawrence University, Nov. 28, 2004.
FRIGHTFUL FRIDAYS: Of the eight Friday games the Blue Devils have played, they have only won one, a 10-3 win over Hamline University, Nov. 8.
SCOUTING UW-STEVENS POINT (15-2-2, 3-2-1 WIAC): Stevens Point is the top soring team in Division III, averagng 5.21 goals per contest, three-quarters of a point ahead of St. Norbert (4.57) nationally and almost a point-and-a-half ahead of UW-Eau Claire (3.79) in the WIAC. The Pointers are currently ranked third in the USCHO.com poll and are currently tied for second place in the WIAC with UW-Eau Claire. UW-River Falls is currently on top of the WIAC. The Pointers have three players who have scored more than 10 goals this season - Garrett Ladd with 16 goals, Scott Henegar with 12 and Nick D'Avolio with 10. D'Avolio snagged the Pointers' first hat trick of the season in an 8-3 win over UW-Superior, Jan. 25. Pointer players command the top three spots in the WIAC statistics in points (Ladd 16-15 - 31, Kyle Sharkey 9-13 - 22, Henegar 12-8 - 20), goals (Ladd 16, Henegar 12, D'Avoilo 10) and assists. . ( Ladd 15, Sharkey 13, Alex Brooks and Kyle Politz 12) Ladd is fifth nationally in points per game (1.63), second in goals per game (0.84) and 25th in assists per game (0.79). Kyle Brodie and Kevin Gibson each have 11 assists. Twenty-six different players have scored at least one point this season. Brandon Jaeger has worked the lion's share of minutes in the goal, and is posting a GAA of 1.87, tops in the league and a saves percentage of .921. Jaeger has a record of 13-2-1 and has recorded three shutouts. The Pointers are outscoring their opponents 99-36 (5.2-1.9). |

POINTERS LEAD COUNTRY IN SCORING: The Pointers lead all NCAA men's divisions in scoring with the 5.21 goals per game average. In Division I, Boston College is averaging 4.33 goals, while Division II Southern New Hampshire is averaging 3.90 goals. Only Plattsburgh State, an NCAA Division III women's program, is averaging more goals than UW-Stevens Point. The Lady Cardinals are averaging 5.44 goals per game.
LAST TIME OUT: The Pointers defeated Bethel University, 5-3 in their final non-conference contest of the season, Feb. 1. Garrett Ladd scored a pair of third-period goals, including the game-winner with one minute remaining, to give the Pointers the win. The Pointers added an empty net goal for the final score. The Pointers Kyle Brodie scored in the first period, but the Royals went ahead with two second period goals. Scott Henegar tied the score for the Pointers before the end of the period, but the Royals took the lead midway through the final period. Ladd scored at 11:57 and 19:00, while Henegar got the empty net goal. Brandon Jaeger stopped 13 shots for the Pointers. Point outshot Bethel, 44-16. |

THE SERIES: The Blue Devils hold a 39-33-3 record with the Pointers. Over the past two-plus seasons, the Pointers holds a 6-1-0 lead in the series. Over the last 10 meetings, the Pointers hold a 6-4-0 advantage. When Stout defeated the Pointers Dec. 7, 2013, it was their first win over Stevens Point since a 5-4 win Feb. 11, 2011 in Menomonie.
USCHO.com POLL: UW-Stevens Point is ranked third in the latest USCHO.com poll. Blue Devil opponents in the poll: UW-Stevens Point (3rd), St. Norbert (2nd), St Thomas (7th), UW-Eau Claire (4th), Utica (15th), UW-River Falls (11th) and Gustavus Adolphus (13th). St. Scholastica is receiving votes. Stevens Point is also ranked third in the latest D3hockey.com poll.
RECORDS AND MILESTONES: Kevin O'Donnell has continued to work his way up the UW-Stout all-time career scoring list. His 86 total points (37-49 - 86) ties him for 11th on the UW-Stout all-time scoring list with Rick Beckfield (1975-79),who has 86 points (49-37). His 37 goals ranks him 20th, behind Nate Legler's (2000-04) 39 goals. His 49 assists moves O'Donnell ahead of
Sam Carr (2009-13) and Glen LaChapelle (1970-73) for ninth on the all-time list. When O'Donnell scored an assist against UW-Eau Claire Feb. 1, it snapped a four-game scoreless streak for the Blue Devils' leading scorer. But O'Donnell is still looking to snap a five game streak where he has not scored a goal. That has happened three times in O'Donnell's career. O'Donnell started off his collegiate career by going goaless his first five games. During his sophomore season, O'Donnell had goal-less streaks of five and seven games, but did score assists during those streaks.

THE COACHES: UW-Stout: Terry Watkins (213-246-28) is in his 18th season as the head coach of the Blue Devils' varsity program. Watkins spent eight years coaching the club team (104-102-16) as Stout prepared to return to varsity status in 1997. Watkins was the 2006-07 NCHA coach of the year when Stout finished in a three-way tie for first. Watkins had a Hall of Fame career at Stout as a defenseman. Stout won a WIAC title in 2010-11, and an NCHA title during the 2006-07 season. Watkins reached 700 games as the head coach of a UW-Stout hockey team (varsity and club) when the Blue Devils played UW-Stevens Point, Dec. 7, 2013.
UW-Stevens Point:.
Chris Brooks (44-24-7) is in his third year as the coach of the Pointers. In his first year, Brooks led the Pointers to the championship game of the NCHA's Peters Cup.
THE CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the five team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The WIAC is made up of Stout, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Superior and UW-River Falls.

STOUT'S RANKED HISTORY: Stout finished the 2008-09 season as the second ranked team in the USCHO.com poll. With the exception of the Nov. 17, 2008, USCHO.com poll, Stout had been ranked in the top 15 since the Nov. 13, 2006, poll. Stout made their first appearance in the poll on Nov. 27, 2000, when they received one vote, then moved up to 10th the following week. The 2008-09 season ending poll matched Stout's previous high mark of second in the Jan. 29, 2007, poll. Stout opened the 2009-10 season ranked third, their highest-ever season-opening ranking, but fell out of the polls midway through the season and returned to the top 15, Nov. 22, 2010. Stout was in the 2011-12 USCHO.com poll early in the season, dropped out, returned again, but dropped out. Stout returned to the poll after a win over top-ranked St. Norbert, Jan. 18, garnering eight votes in the Jan. 21 poll, effectively ranking the Blue Devils 19th. |
