MENOMONIE (February 21, 2014) - UW-Superior scored twice in the third period to take a 3-1 lead and UW-Stout could only get a score with three seconds remaining in the game as the Yellowjackets carried a 3-2 win out of the Dunn County Ice Arena Friday.
The win gives the Yellowjackets the fourth seed in the WIAC Tournament, while Stout is the fifth seed. The Blue Devils will travel to Superior, Tuesday, Feb. 25 for a first round tournament game.
The Yellowjackets (8-13-3, 3-6-2 WIAC) got on the board first on an unassisted goal by Michael Rey at 9:36 in the first period. Stout (8-17-0, 4-8-0 WIAC) evened the score when
Hunter Scott (Fr, Eau Claire) scored at 8:57 of the second period, with assists by
Patrick Regan (Jr, Edina, Minn) and
Riley Colvard (Fr, Centerville, Minn).
The Yellowjackets took the lead back coming out of the break when Rey scored his second goal of the evening seven seconds into the third period. Superior jumped out front 3-1 on a Anton Svensson goal at 9:09.
The Blue Devils pulled goalie
Corey Koop (Fr, Squamish, BC) with a minute left to put the extra attacker on the ice. Superior was whistled for a penalty with 29 seconds left and
Logan Maly (Sr, Rio) scored with three ticks left on the clock, with an assist by
Kevin O'Donnell (Sr, Stoughton)..
Koop finished the night with 34 saves. Dayn Belfour of Superior had 32 saves.
