Hockey Preview: Stout to take on Falcons Friday and Saturday in River Falls

THIS WEEK'S GAME: The Blue Devils (7-14-0, 3-5-0 WIAC) will be at UW-River Falls (12-6-1, 5-3 WIAC), Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15. Both games begin at 7:05 p.m.  The Falcons were ranked 11th in the latest USCHO.com Top 15 poll.

THE 2013-14 BLUE DEVILS (7-14-0, 3-5-0 WIAC): Kevin O'Donnell leads Stout with a team-high 10 goals and nine assists.  Zach Vierling is second on the team in scoring with seven goals and a team-high 10 assists. Jordan Tredinnick has six goals and seven assists, while Danny Ray has four goals and eight  assists.   Matt Millis has four goals and seven assists, while team captain Logan Maly has three goals and eight assists. Tyler Cayemberg and Joey Haydock each have three goals and  four assists.  Craig Lindegard has four goals and three assists. Twenty different Blue Devils have scored at least one point, while 15 have scored at least one goal, and 19 have scored at least one assist. Corey Koop has spent the most time in the net, posting a 3.49 goals against average and a saves percentage of .906. His 59 saves against nationally ranked UW-Stevens Point in December was the most by a Stout goalie in more than 10 years in a single game. But fellow freshman Chase Hollander is making a case to spend more time between the pipes. Hollander, the first Wisconsin native to start in goal for Stout since Justin Wiskie during the 2000-01 season, has a GAA of 1.95 in 184 minutes with a saves percentage of .943, along with a win over No. 3 UW-Stevens Point. As a team, Stout is being outscored, 72-54 (3.4-2.6). Stout has lost five games by one goal and has won five games by one goal.  |  2013-14 Statistics

SPECIAL TEAMS: The Blue Devils have scored 16 power play goals, going 14-of-76 (21.1 percent). Kevin O'Donnell has three poiwer play goals, while Matt Millis, Danny Ray, Craig Lindegard and Logan Maly each have two power play goals. Justin Moody, Hunter Scott, Zach Vierling, Jordan Tredinnick and Jake Useldinger each have a power play goal.  Stout is last in the WIAC in penalty kill, allowing 20 power play goals in 101 opportunities (19.8  percent). Stout has two shorthanded goals with Moody and Nolan Kirley scoring the shorties. 

STOUT'S LAST TIME OUT: Last time out: Stout split with third ranked UW-Stevens Point, falling 6-2 Feb. 7, but came back with a 4-2 win over the Pointers, Feb. 8. Stout is the only team to have beaten Stevens Point twice this season so far. Goalie Chase Hollander, maing his second collegiate start, kept the top scoring team in the country off the scoreboard for more than two periods and recorded his first collegiate win, a 4-2 decision over third ranked UW-Stevens Point, Feb. 8. Hollander recorded 11 saves in the first period and 11 saves in the second period. The Pointers did score at 5:25 in the third period, but Hollander recorded 15 third period saves to finish the night with 37 saves. In the third period, Hollander was able to fend off one power play opportunity, then gave up a late power play 3-on-4 goal. Facing an extra attacker for the final 90 seconds-plus of the game, Hollander pushed aside all Pointer shots. Hollander allowed only one power play goal in five opportunities. Stout scored the first three goals of the game. Zach Vierling scored in the first period, and Tyler Cayemberg and Derek Sand added second period markers. LAST TIME THEY MET: UW-Stout scored two goals in the final two minutes to send the game into overtime, but UW-River Falls scored 1:29 into the extra period to defeat the Blue Devils, 5-4, in the WIAC opener Dec. 5 at the Dunn County Ice Arena. Trailing 4-2 with less than two minutes remaining, Jordan Tredinnick scored at 18:29 and Zach Vierling scored with an extra defender on the ice with 48 seconds remaining in regulation. The Blue Devils took a trip to the River Falls zone in the overtime, but the Falcons' Taylor Burden scored to end the game. The Blue Devils got on the board first with an early goal by Kevin O'Donnell1:25 into the first period. The Falcons scored the next three goals to take a 3-1 lead before O'Donnell scored in the third to pull Stout to wthin 3-2. ICE TIME: Nolan Kirley, Matt Millis, Zach Vierling, Derek Sand, Jordan Tredinnick, Logan Maly, and Jake Useldinger have played in all 21 games this season.

SUCCESSFUL DEBUT: Freshman goalkeeper Chase Hollander made a successful debut Saturday, Jan. 25, when he kept St. John's off the scoreboard for the more than 31 minutes he played. Hollander got the call with the Blue Devils trailing 4-1 midway through the second period, then stuffed the Johnnies with nine saves in the second and 12 saves in the third. Hollander's imitation of a brick wall allowed Stout to climb back into the game with two third period goals. Hollander was pulled with 34 seconds remaining to put an extra attacker on the ice.

LENDING A HAND: When goalie Corey Koop was awarded an assist on Nov. 23 against St. Norbert, it was the first time a Stout goalie had earned an assist since Jake Schuman picked up an assist against Lawrence University, Nov. 28, 2004.

FRIGHTFUL FRIDAYS: Of the nine Friday games the Blue Devils have played, they have only won one, a 10-3 win over Hamline University, Nov. 8.

SCOUTING UW-RIVER FALLS (12-6-1, 5-3 WIAC):  The Falcons are led by Wllie HEss with 10 goals and five assists. Blake Huppert has seven goals and seven assists. Ryan Doner, Jeff Burke and Christian George each have nine assists. Doner has five goals and Burke and George each have three goals. Mitch Kontny has seven goals and four assists. Hess leads the Falcons in power play goals with three and has two of the team's four shorthanded goals. Huppert, Doner, Burke and Jon Schreiner each have two power play goals. Scott Lewan and Tanner Milliron have shared time in the net, with Lewan logging 734 minutes and Milliron 556 minutes. Milliron has a 4-2-3 overall record with a GAA of 2.16 and a saves percentage of .821. Lewan has a record of 8-4-0 with a GAA of 2.21 and a saves percentage of .926. LAST TIME OUT: The Falcons tied 2-2 with Gustavus Adolphus College, Feb. 7. The game was scoreless until all four goals were scored in the third period. Gustavus scored 55 seconds into the final period, but River Falls took the lead by Christian George and Michael Lant. The Gusties scored the tying goal with five minutes remaining in regulation. THE SERIES: The Falcons hold a 67-21-1 lead in the series.

USCHO.com POLL: UW-Stevens Point is ranked third in the latest USCHO.com poll.   Blue Devil opponents in the poll: UW-Stevens Point (3rd), St. Norbert (2nd), St Thomas (7th), UW-Eau Claire (4th), Utica (15th), UW-River Falls (11th) and Gustavus Adolphus (13th). St. Scholastica is receiving votes. Stevens Point is also ranked third in the latest D3hockey.com poll.

RECORDS AND MILESTONES: Kevin O'Donnell has continued to work his way up the UW-Stout all-time career scoring list. His 88 total points (38-50 - 88) places him 11th on the UW-Stout all-time scoring list ahead of Rick Beckfield (1975-79),who has 86 points (49-37), and just behind Jack Roach (1973-75) and Jim Cuilla (1968-72) who have 89 points.  His 38 goals ranks him 20th, behind Nate Legler's (2000-04) 39 goals. His 50 assists ties O'Donnell for seventh along Chuck Gerber (1971-75) and Jack Wolgemuth (2005-09).

AWARDS AND HONORS: Logan Maly was the WIAC player of the week after being named to the Oswego Classic all-tournament team...Corey Koop was the WIAC and the UW-Stout Northwestern Mutual player of the week, Dec. 10, after making 59 saves against nationally ranked UW-Stevens Point...Kevin O'Donnell was a first team all-WIAC selection last season; Jordan Tredinnick and Zach Vierling honorable mention all-WIAC.

TEAM CAPTAINS: Logan Maly is the team captain, while Kevin O'Donnell and Zach Vierling are assistant captains for the 2013-14 season.

THE COACHES: UW-Stout:  Terry Watkins (214-247-28) is in his 18th season as the head coach of the Blue Devils' varsity program. Watkins spent eight years coaching the club team (104-102-16) as Stout prepared to return to varsity status in 1997. Watkins was the 2006-07 NCHA coach of the year when Stout finished in a three-way tie for first. Watkins had a Hall of Fame career at Stout as a defenseman. Stout won a WIAC title in 2010-11, and an NCHA title during the 2006-07 season. Watkins reached 700 games as the head coach of a UW-Stout hockey team (varsity and club) when the Blue Devils played UW-Stevens Point, Dec. 7, 2013. UW-River Falls:. Steve Freeman (166-98-25) is in his 18th year as the head coach of the Falcons.

THE CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the five team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The WIAC is made up of Stout, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Superior and UW-River Falls.

2012-13 BLUE DEVILS (10-13-2, 5-13-0 NCHA): After a hot start to the season, Stout finished the 2012-13 season with a 10-15-2 overall record, 5-13-0 in their last season in the NCHA and 2-10-0 in the WIAC.   | 2012-13 Statistics

STOUT'S RANKED HISTORY: Stout finished the 2008-09 season as the second ranked team in the USCHO.com poll. With the exception of the Nov. 17, 2008, USCHO.com poll, Stout had been ranked in the top 15 since the Nov. 13, 2006, poll. Stout made their first appearance in the poll on Nov. 27, 2000, when they received one vote, then moved up to 10th the following week. The 2008-09 season ending poll matched Stout's previous high mark of second  in the Jan. 29, 2007, poll. Stout opened the 2009-10 season ranked third, their highest-ever season-opening ranking, but fell out of the polls midway through the season and returned to the top 15, Nov. 22, 2010. Stout was in the 2011-12 USCHO.com poll early in the season, dropped out, returned again, but  dropped out. Stout returned to the poll after a win over top-ranked St. Norbert, Jan. 18, garnering eight votes in the Jan. 21 poll, effectively ranking the Blue Devils 19th. | USCHO.com Division III poll

UP NEXT:  The Blue Devils will close out the regular season when they travel to UW-Eau Claire, Thursday, Feb. 20 and a home contest with UW-Superior, Friday, Feb. 21. The Superior game will be senior night with the Blue Devils recognizing Kevin O'Donnell, Russel Whited, Logan Maly, and Casey Kirley. The WIAC Championship Tournament will get underway with a first round game, Tuesday, Feb. 25, with the fifth seeded team at the fourth seeded team. The semi-final found will be Feb. 28-March 1, with the championship game Saturday, March 8. All games are at the highest seeded team.
