UW-Stout 77, St. Catherine 70ST. PAUL, Minn (November 20, 2014) - UW-Stout held off a late charge by St. Catherine to pick up their first win of the season, downing the Wildcats, 77-70, Thursday.
The Blue Devils (1-2) built up by as much as a 12 point lead halfway through the second half, but St. Catherine (2-1) came back to twice tie the game in the waning minutes of the game.
St. Kate's Audra Clark hit a 3-pointer with 3:09 remaining in the game to tie the score at 65-65.
Haley Froehlich (Sr, Mondovi) answered back second later with a 3-pointer to give Stout a lead they would not relinquish.
Caitlin Coombs (Sr, Alma) stretched the lead to 70-65 and
Brea Boomer (Sr, Grand Portage, Minn) nailed two free throws for a seven point lead.
LaShay Holt cut Stout's lead to 72-67, but
Jenna Goldsmith (So, St. Anthony, Minn), who would score a team-high 17 points, put the lead back to seven points. Another 3-pointer by Clark cut the lead to four points, 74-70, with 28 seconds left.
Katelynne Folkers (Sr, Fall Creek) made 3-of-4 free throws in the final 17 seconds to seal the win.
Goldsmith led Stout, which trailed 31-30 at halftime, by hitting 8-of-9 shots from the floor. Froehlich scored 14 points, connecting on 4-of-5 3-pointers. Boomer pulled down a team-high eight rebounds, and scored eight points, hitting all eight of her free throw attempts..
Becca Smith (So, Victoria, Minn) scored eight points, all in the first half. Stout had six players that recorded four or more rebounds.
The Wildcats' Clark led all scorers with 19 points and Holt scored 16 points and had nine rebounds. Mary Neumann had a team-high 10 rebounds.
Stout will be at nationally ranked St. Mary's University, Friday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m.
