Carroll University 74, UW-Stout 59DE PERE (November 16, 2014) - Several times, the UW-Stout women's basketball team would find themselves trailing by double digits. And several times the Blue Devils would pull to within striking range. But in the end, Carroll University pulled ahead enough to take a 74-59 win over the Blue Devils Sunday at the St. Norbert Tip-Off Classic.
Stout (0-2) led early before Carroll went on a 17-2 run to take a 25-12 lead eight minutes into the game, a lead the Pioneers (2-0) would not relinquish. Stout would cut into the lead. Four free throws by
Haley Froehlich (Sr, Mondovi), a jumper by
Brea Boomer (Sr, Grand Portage, Minn) and a 3-pointer by
Sarah Schoch (So, Chippewa Falls) pulled Stout to within 29-25 with seven minutes left in the half.
The Blue Devils would go cold before the half as Carroll raced out to a 39-25 lead. Stout would cut the lead to 39-30 on a free throw by
Becca Smith (So, Victoria, Minn), a layup by
Jasmyne Hazelton (So, Eau Claire) and a bucket by Froehlich heading into haltime.
The teams would trade buckets early in the second half and Stout cut the lead to four points, on a jumper by Boomer and two baskets by Froehlich to make it 45-41 in favor of Carroll.
The Pioneers took the lead up to 57-47 halfway through the half and Stout would get no closer the rest of the way.
Schoch, who was named to the all-tournament team, led Stout with 17 points, connecting on 5-of-8 3-pointers. Froehlich finsihed with 10 points.
The Pioneers' Rachel Van Sluys led all scorers with 17 points, 15 of them coming in the first half. Breann Maryanski added 12 points.
Stout will be at St. Catherine, Thursday, Nov. 20 and at St. Mary's Friday, Nov. 21.
