Addy Maher's goal stands up, Blue Devils off to WIAC Tournament

STEVENS POINT (November 1, 2014) - UW-Stout's Addy Maher (Jr, Racine) couldn't have scored her first goal of the season at a better time.

The Blue Devil junior forward scored unassisted in the 34th minute and a solid defensive effort made the goal stand up as Stout defeated UW-Stevens Point, 1-0, Saturday at the Stevens Point Soccer Bowl.

The win guarantees the Blue Devils (5-9-1, 3-4-1 WIAC) a spot in the quarterfinals of the WIAC Soccer Championship. Stout will play at UW-Eau Claire, Tuesday, Nov. 4.at 2 p.m.

Maher entered the game as a substitute in the 23rd minute and took her only shot of the day, making it count 12 minutes later.

The Blue Devils defense put up a solid effort. Both teams launched 10 shots on the afternoon, but the Pointers (7-10.1, 2-5-1 WIAC) put more on net, with Stout goalkeeper Paige Meyer turning away eight shots on frame, three in the first half and five in the secon, including two in the final three minutes of the game.

Stevens Point's Kristen Churkey turned away four shots on net, three in the first and one in the second.

Stout will be at UW-Eau Claire, Tuesday, Nov. 4 at 2 p.m. in the WIAC tournament.
