Archived VideoMENOMONIE (October 15, 2014) - UW-Stout found themselves on the bad end of a loss and a lopsided third set score, but played well enough to take a five set match over a spunky UW-Superior team Wednesday at Johnson Fieldhouse.
The Blue Devils (17-7, 3-2 WIAC) went on to win the match, 20-25, 25-13, 16-25, 25-19, 15-6. The Yellowjackets (8-19, 1-4 WIAC) controlled the tempo in both the opening and third set, but Stout dominated the second set, and did enough to win the fourth set, setting up the fifth and deciding set.
Morgan Denny (Sr, Luck) came ready to play in the first half of the fifth set and
Molly Brion (Jr, Cameron) made her presence known in the second half of the set. Denny put down three kills as Stout built up and 8-4 advantage as the teams switched benches. Brion took over in the second half of the set, cranking out three kills as Stout built a 13-5 lead.
Ashley Pratt (Fr, Lakeville, Minn) gave Stout a 14-5 lead with a tap kill over the front line. The 'Jackets' Leah Nightengale found a hole in Stout's defense to make it 14-6, but
Olivia Jung (So, Andover, Minn) got the deciding kill and the Blue Devils breathed a sigh of relief.
Denny and Brion both finished with 15 kills. Pratt and
Carly Troudt (Fr, Lino Lakes, Minn) connected on nine kills and Jung finished the night with eight.
Superior's Stephanie Bandelin led all scorers with 17 kills. The Yellowjackets stymied Stout at the net at times, recording two solo blocks and 14 assisted blocks. Anna Hendrix teamed up for six block assists and Bandelin had five.
Stout will be at the UW-River Falls Invitational, Friday, Oct. 17 and Saturday, Oct. 18
