Blue Devils nearly comeback from a three goal deficit to St.John's

MENOMONIE (January 25, 2014) - UW-Stout allowed three second period goals to fall behind by three goals, then nearly came back before falling to St. John's University, 4-3, Saturday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

The Blue Devils (6-11-0) and the Johnnies (11-6-0) played to 1-1 draw after the first period before St. John's scored three times in the first eight minutes of the second period, chasing Stout starter Corey Koop (Fr, Squamish, BC). 

The Johnnies got goals from Joe Freeman at 1:01, Jason Johnson at 4:56 and Jone Haeg at 8:06.

The Blue Devils sent Chase Hollender (Fr, Random Lake) to the net, and Hollander did not allow a goal the rest of the way, stopping nine second period shots and 12 in the third period to finish with 21 saves.

While Hollander was doing his brick wall imitaion, Stout's offense kicked into gear in the third period. Zach Vierling (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn) scored at 5:10 of the period, with an assist from Jordan Tredinnick (Jr, Onalaska). Logan Maly (Sr, Rio) pulled Stout to within one goal at 13:21, with assists by Nolan Kirley (Fr, Hayward) and Jake Useldinger (So, East Grand Forks, Minn).

Stout pulled Hollander with 34 seconds remaining, but could not get the equalizer while skaing with an extra defender.

St. John's opened the scoring five minutes into the game on a power play goal by Justin Hochsprung. Stout tied the score on a goal by Joey Haydock (Fr, Junction City) at 10:08, with assists by Matt Millis (Jr, Black River Falls) ad Vierling.

Hollander finished with 21 saves and Koop 15. The Johnnies; Mitch Thompson recorded 17 saves.

Stout will host UW-Eau Claire, Friday, Jan. 31 and Saturday, Feb. 1. The puck will drop at 7:30 p.m. both nights.
