Blue Devils come from behind to down Concordia-Moorhead in overtime

MOORHEAD, Minn. (January 11, 2014) - Danny Ray (So, Grand Forks, ND) scored with less than a minute remaining in overtime to cap off a UW-Stout 5-4 come-from-behind win over Concordia-Moorhead Saturday afternoon.

The Blue Devils (5-9-0) trailed 3-1 at one point in the late in the first period, but answered back with three consecutive goals - one with two minutes remaining in the first period by Zach Vierling (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn), his second goal of the period, and two in the third period to take a 4-3 lead.

The Cobbers tied the game at 4-4 with just over two minutes remaining to send the game into overtime.

Ray scored his fourth goal of the season, unassisted, with 56 seconds remaining in the game.

The first period was a wild period, with the two teams scoring five goals between them. The Cobbers Jordie Bancroft scored first, but Vierling scored his first goal of the game, this one coming on a power play with assists by Kevin O'Donnell (Sr, Stoughton) and Jordan Tredinnick (Jr, Onalaska). The Cobbers took a 3-1 lead on a power play goal by Dan Hrabowych and an even strengthed goal by Jeremy Johnson.

Vierling scored at 18:21 to cut the lead to 3-2, again assisted by O'Donnell and Tredinnick. Matt Millis opened the third period with a goal 41 seconds into the stanza to tie fhe game and  O'Donnell gave Stout the lead nine minutes later, on assists by Vierling and Logan Maly (Sr, Rio). Concordia's Garrett Hendrickson tied the score with a power play goal at 17:19.

Stout's Corey Koop (Fr, Squamish, BC) finished the afternoon with 40 saves, while Concordia's Chris Neamonitis had 34 saves.

Stout will be at UW-Superior Friday, Jan. 17 and Saturday, Jan. 18 to resume WIAC play.
