Pair of power play goals by Johnnies spell difference in 5-3 loss

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (January 9, 2014) - UW-Stout matched St. John's University goal-for-goal, but then allowed two power play goals within five minutes of playing time and the Johnnies carried a 5-3 win out of the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center Friday.

The Johnnies (7-6-0) drew first blood on Josh Gross's first goal of the night, this one coming 60minutes, 41-seconds into the game. Stout's Jordan Tredinnick (Jr, Onalaska) tied the game less than a minute later with assists by Logan Maly and Joey Haydock.

The Johnnies took the 2-1 lead into the locker room when Nick Vatnsdal scored with less than two minutes remaining in the period.

Stout (4-9-0) tied the score for the second time when Kevin O'Donnell (Sr, Stoughton) scored at the 15:09 mark in the second stanza. Assists went to Craig Lindegard and Derek Sand.

St. John's then scored consecutive power play goals, the first at 18:42 of the second period by NIck Senta and the second by Gross at 3:25 of the third period.

Stout would pull to within a goal on Zach Vierling's (Jr, Coon Rapids, Minn) goal at 7:41, with assists to Tredinnick and Maly.

The Johnnies got an empty net goal with 52 ticks left on the clock.

Stout's Corey Koop (Fr, Squamish, BC) recorded 39 saves, while the Johnnies' Saxton Soley had 31 saves.

Stout will be at Concordia-Moorhead, Saturday, Jan. 11 for a 2 p.m. contest.
