Blue Devils get offensive in sweep over River Falls Tuesday

MENOMONIE (April 16, 2013) - Taylor Workman (So, Prior Lake, Minn) hit two home runs in the first game, Sam Hastings (Jr, Waukesha) hit one in each game and Erin Moss (Sr, Munster, Ind) kept the fireworks going throughout the afternoon with a home run in the second game and five stolen bases on the day as UW-Stout defeated UW-River Falls, 13-2 in five innings, and 8-1, Tuesday at Don & Nona Williams Stadium.

Workman got things going in the first game with a two-run blast in the first inning as Stout (18-6, 6-2 WIAC) scored three runs in the first, second, third and fifth innings to put the Falcons (18-10, 3-5 WIAC) on the mercy rule.

Stout rolled up 17 hits and Blue Devil pitchers Laura Vanderhoof (Jr, Mankato, Minn), Tori Workman (Fr, Prior Lake, Minn) and Emily Wegscheid (Fr, St. Peter, Minn) allowed only four hits in the contest. The Falcons' only runs came on a two-run home run by Sarah Bohlen in the fourth inning.

Jessica Nicol (Sr, Eau Claire) had a strong game at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI. Workman was 3-for-3 with five RBI. Workman hit her second home run, a three-run laser beam, in the second inning. Hastings was 2-for-4 with two RBI and three runs scored. Hastings hit a solo shot in the fifth inning. Moss was 1-for-2 at the plate, but made the most of a couple of walks, stealing three bases throughout the game.

Hastings got Stout on the board first in the second contest, hitting a two-run home run in the top of the first inning after Moss led off the game with a double.

The Falcons cut Stout's lead in half when Kristy Martinson drove in their only run of the game in the second inning. Hannah Sweet (Jr, Elk River, Minn) gave Stout a 3-1 lead with an RBI single in the third.

The Blue Devils put up three runs in the fifth, the first coming on an Alison Gray (Sr, St. Cloud, Minn) double. Blue Devil batters worked the bases loaded and twice scored on bases loaded walks. Taylor Workman drove in a run in the sixth and Moss homered in the seventh to close out the scoring. Vanderhoof went six innings to get the win..

Stout is scheduled to host UW-Eau Claire, Thursday, April 18, weather permitting. The Blue Devils will then host UW-Whitewater, Saturday, April 20 at 11 a.m. and UW-Oshkosh, Sunday, April 21 at 2 p.m.
