Stout pushes Minnesota Twins' rookie team to 10 innings, but falls, 3-2

FORT MYERS, Fla. (March 19, 2013) - The stats won't count, but the experience will go a long way with UW-Stout's baseball team.

UW-Stout pushed the Minnesota Twins' Gulf Coast League team to ten innings in an exhibition game Wednesday, but fell, 3-2, when the Twins produced a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom half of the final inning.

Not all was lost, though, as the the Blue Devils got a chance to compete with some of the Twins' biggest major league prospects. Not only did they give the future big-leaguers all they could handle, Stout took pre-game warmups with the Minnesota Twins' current third baseman, Trevor Plouffe, who himself had a stint in Fort Myers after being drafted by the Twins in 2004.

"It was a really cool experience," said head coach Toby Gardenhire. "We faced some of their big prospects and the guys played great."

After entering the 10th inning tied at one apiece, Stout took a 2-1 lead in the top half of the inning. They could not hold on to the win, however, as the Twins scored on the sac fly when they barely beat the relay from the outfield.

Stout will finish a single game against Utica College, tomorrow, March 20, a makeup of Tuesday's game that was postponed due to rain. Stout holds a 1-0 lead in the game, which barely got underway before it was called.
