CLERMONT, Fla. (March 17, 2013) - UW-Stout scored three runs in the first inning and ran away to an 8-1 victory over Benedictine University, Sunday evening in their first of two games on the evening. In their nightcap, Stout struck out 17 times in 23 plate appearances as they suffered a 2-0 loss to Tufts University.
Tori Workman (Fr, Prior Lake, Minn.), who was the winning pitcher and 4-for-4 at the plate in the first game, got the scoring started in the first inning. After
Sam Hastings (Jr, Waukesha) reached on a fielder's choice, Workman drove her in to take a 1-0 lead. Workman's sister,
Taylor Workman (So, Prior Lake, Minn.) then put Stout (5-3) up 3-0 with a bases-clearing double.
Stout added some insurance runs in the sixth inning as they batted through the order.
Jessica Nicol (Sr, Eau Claire),
Sam Stout (So, La Crosse), and
Lynzi Knudtson (So, Melrose) each hit singles in succession to begin the inning. Hastings drove in a run with a single one batter before
Alison Gray (Sr, St. Cloud, Minn.) doubled to score two more. Five Blue Devils crossed home plate before inning's end and Stout coasted to an 8-1 victory.
Tori Workman picked up the win to even her record at 2-2.
The second game was another Story for Stout. Tufts pitcher Allyson Fournier struck out at least two batters in every inning and struck out the side three times. Four Blue Devils struck out every time they stepped in the batters box as Fournier simply had her way on the mound.
Laura Vanderhoof (Jr, Mankato, Minn.), who also assumed three innings of pitching duties, recorded Stout's only hit, doing so in the seventh inning.
Tufts, who advanced to the NCAA DIII Championship finals a year ago, added a run in each of the third and fifth innings to improve to 3-1 this season as they chase their impressive 41-7 record from last season.
Stout has another doubleheader on tap tomorrow, starting with a 5 p.m. (ET) contest with Oswego State followed by a 7 p.m. game with Manchester University.
