MENOMONIE (February 7, 2013) - The regular season comes to a close this weekend when UW-Stout hosts
UW-Stevens Point (13-9-1, 7-8-1 NCHA, 6-4-1 WIAC), Thursday, Feb. 7 and
St. Norbert College, Friday, Feb. 8. Both games are slated to get started at 7:30 p.m. The Blue Devils will participate in the quarterfinals of the Peters Cup, Feb. 15-16, at a yet to be determined place and against a yet to be determined opponent. The Blue Devils, who are currently in seventh place in the NCHA, still have an outside chance of hosting a Peters Cup quarterfinals series. The Friday night game will be senior night and the Blue Devils will honor

2012-13 BLUE DEVILS (10-11-2): The Blue Devils' can be an enigmatic team Stout is being outshot, 768-637, by their opponents, but are only being outscored, 71-66. The Blue Devils have a power play percentage of 19.3 percent (16-83) and have a penalty kill percentage of 84.4 percent (17-109). Eighteen players have scored goals for the Blue Devils and 20 have recorded at least one point.
Kevin O'Donnell leads the team in scoring with 11 goals and 10 assists for 21 points.
Garrett Grimstad is leading the team in assists with 13 and has seven assists to go along. Jason Cohen and
Joe Beaudette each have 12 assists apiece. Beaudette has three goals (3-12-15) and Cohen five goals (5-12-17).
Zach Vierling trails O'Donnell in goals with eight (8-7-15).
Sam Carr has five goals (5-8-13),
Jordan Treddinick four (4-9-13) and
Mike Hartviksen five (5-5-9). Cohen's plus/minus of +15 is the best on the team, trailed by
Beaudette, who boasts a +11 rate.
Nick Hopper has a 9-7-2 overall record with a goals against average of 2.65, the best of his career, and a .916 saves percentage. Hopper has played in 1087 of the total 1400 minutes of action (77.5 percent). |

HOME ICE ADVANTAGE: While it's never been labeled one of the nicest or prettiest venues in sports, the Dunn County Ice Arena has been a comfortable place for the Blue Devils this season. They are 8-3 at home this season, including wins over their only two ranked opponents. Further validating their home ice advantage is their 1-5-2 record away from the Dunn Co. Since the 2006-07 season, UW-Stout is 57-24-5 at the Dunn County Ice Arena.
STOUT'S LAST TIME OUT: UW-Eau Claire scored with one second remaining in the game to lift the Blugolds to a 4-3 win, Feb. 1. Stout trailed midway through the first period, but came back to tie the score with a goal in the first and two goals in the second. |

SCOUTING UW-STEVENS POINT (13-9-1, 7-8-1 NCHA, 6-4-1 WIAC): The Pointers are currently in third place in the NCHA and are coming off a 6-3 loss to a surging St. Scholastica last weekend. The Pointers are led by Garrett Ladd with 18 points (4 goals, 14 assists). Kyle Heck and Scott Heneger each have 10 goals. Heck has seven assists for 17 points and Heneger has six goals fo r16 points. Kevin Gibson has recorded 12 assists, with two goals and Andrew Kolb has 10 assists with six goals. Brandon Jaeger has played the majority of games in goal, including the two wins against Stout back in December. Jaeger has a 9-4-1 overall record with a GAA of 2.74 and a saves percentage of .875. Jaeger has played 876 minutes, while Nick Graves has played 510 minutes. Graves has a record of 4-5-0, with a GAA of 2.47 and a saves percentage of .905. Graves has three shutouts on the season, while Jaeger has one. The Pointers have a power play percentage of 15.9, while their penalty kill is 83.9 percent. |

UW-STEVENS POINT'S LAST TIME OUT: The Pointers defeated UW-Superior, 2-1, Feb. 1, then fell to St. Scholastica, 6-3, in their final regular season home game of the year, Feb. 2. Jerry Freismuth got the game-winning-goal with about five minutes remaining in the second period and the Pointers hung on to down Superior. Neither team got off many shots throughout the evening, with both goalies recording 13 saves each. Scott Heneger put the Pointers on the board first with a power play goal two minutes into the game. Superior tied the game midway through the second period. |
Stevens Point 2, Superior 1 | The Saints opened up the game with four consecutive goals, two in the first period, two in the second period, to take a 4-0 lead into the third period when the majority of score occured. The Pointers cut the lead in half with goals by Joshua Daley and Tyler Krueger in the first 10 minutes of the final stanza. But the Saints made it 5-2 minutes later. Heneger made it 5-3 on a shorthanded goal at the 14 minute mark. |
St. Scholastica 6, UW-Stevens Point 3
THE SERIES: Stevens Point leads the series, 40-27-3. The Pointers have won the last five meetings. Stout's last win over Stevens Point came Feb. 11, 2011.
LAST TIME WHEN THEY MET (Dec. 8-9): The Pointers swept the series at Willett Arena, blanking and spanking the Blue Devils, 8-0, Dec. 8. But Stout bounced back the next night, only to lose in overtime, 4-3. In the opener, the Pointers scored three first period goals, then tagged on two in the second and three in the third. SCOUTING ST. NORBERT COLLEGE (17-5-1, 11-4-1 NCHA): The Green Knights clinched the second seed in the Peters Cup and still have a chance to tie UW-Eau Claire for the NCHA Championship. Kyle Stroh leads the league in all three scoring categories - goals (17), assists (18) and points (35) and is seventh nationally in points and sixth nationally in goals. Stroh is followed by Cody Keefer (12-15-27), Joe Perry (11-16-27), Cullen Bradshaw (13-12-25) and Tyler Zepeda (9-12-21). David Jacobson has amassed the most time in goal, playing 1179 of the total 1387 minutes. Jacobson is posting a 14-5-1 overall record with a 1.73 GAA and a saves percentage of .924. The Knights have a power play percentage of 30.2 (38-126) and a penalty kill of 90.2 (8-82). |

ST. NORBERT'S LAST TIME OUT: St. Norbert lost to St. Scholastica, 5-2, Feb. 1, then defeated Superior, 4-1, the next day. The Green Knights have lost their last three Friday night games, but then have bounced back to win the next night. |
St. Scholastica 5, St. Norbert 2 | Cody Keeler scored two first period goals as the Knights went on to defeat Superior. The Yellowjackets outshot St. Norbert, 28-19, but goaltender David Jacobson turned away 27 shots.

THE SERIES: St. Norbert leads the series, 34-6-3. Over the last 15 games, St. Norbert owns a 10-4-1 record in the series. The last time Stout won two games in a year against St. Norbert was during the 2008-09 season, the year Stout went to the Frozen Four.
LAST TIME WHEN THEY MET (JAN. 18-19): The teams split, with Stout winning the opening game, 4-3, but St. Norbert came back to win the next afternoon, 4-1.

USCHO.com POLL: UW-Eau Claire moved up one spot to fourth and is still receiving one first place vote in the latest USHCO.com poll. St. Norbert dropped to sixth. UW-Stevens Point has received 17 votes and UW-River Falls, seven.
THE NCHA: UW-Eau Claire clinced the No. 1 seed in the Peters Cup tournament, and St. Norbert had grabbed onto the No. 2 spot. UW-Stevens Point is currently in third place with 15 points. UW-Superior and St. Scholastica are tied for fourth with 13 points. UW-River Falls is sixth (11 points) and UW-Stout seventh (10 points).
THE WIAC: UW-Eau Claire has clinched the WIAC title. Stevens Point is currently second, River Falls third, Superior fourth and Stout fifth.
RECORDS AND MILESTONES: Sam Carr needs to duplicate his assist total from last season in order to pass Joel Gaulrapp and current head coach
Terry Watkins for fourth all time in assists. He currently has eight assists, and nine more would put him at 55 for his career. Also, Carr needs to match his jersey number, 24, in games played this season in order to hit the 100-game milestone for his career, and he should get that this weekend. The last player to do so was his brother, Robert Carr, along with two others in the 2010-11 season. Coincidentally, Robert played in 27 games his final season, which matched his jersey number as well...
Charles Lachance has recorded 188 penalty minutes over hist career, and is fifth on the all-time list. Three Blue Devis have exceeded the 200-minute total, led by Bill Cutter with 277 minutes from 1979-83...
Kevin O'Donnell has worked his way onto the UW-Stout all-time career scoring list. His 65 total points (27-38-65) ranks him 30th and his 38 assists ranks him 24th. Thirty career goals is the cutoff to appear on the all-time goals list.

Zach Vierling was named the NCHA player of the week, Dec. 3, after scoring two game-winning goals against St. Scholastica. Vierling scored his first collegiate game winner in overtime, then the following day scored a pair of goals in a 5-2 win, including the unassisted game winner. Vierling was also named the UW-Stout athlete of the week...
Nick Hopper was named the NCHA player of the week, Nov. 19, after posting a pair of wins over nationally ranked St. Thomas and UW-Superior. Hopper was also named the UW-Stout athlete of the week.
THE COACHES: UW-Stout: Terry Watkins (207-227-28) is in his 17th season as the head coach of the Blue Devils' varsity program. Watkins spent eight years coaching the club team (104-102-16) as Stout prepared to return to varsity status in 1997. Watkins was the 2006-07 NCHA coach of the year when Stout finished in a three-way tie for first. Watkins had a Hall of Fame career at Stout as a defenseman. Stout won a WIAC title in 2010-11, and an NCHA title during the 2006-07 season

St. Norbert College:.
Tim Coghlin is in his 20th season as the head coach of the Green Knights. Coghlin's teams have won three national titles and three times have finished as runner-up.
THE CONFERENCES: Stout, Stevens Point and St. Norbert are members of the seven-team Northern Collegiate Hockey Association (NCHA). Stout and Stevens Point are members of the five team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The WIAC is made up of Stout, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Superior and UW-River Falls. The NCHA includes the five WIAC schools as well as St. Norbert and St. Scholastica. This is the final year of the existence of the NCHA.
STOUT'S RANKED HISTORY: Stout finished the 2008-09 season as the second ranked team in the USCHO.com poll. With the exception of the Nov. 17, 2008, USCHO.com poll, Stout had been ranked in the top 15 since the Nov. 13, 2006, poll. Stout made their first appearance in the poll on Nov. 27, 2000, when they received one vote, then moved up to 10th the following week. The 2008-09 season ending poll matched Stout's previous high mark of second in the Jan. 29, 2007, poll. Stout opened the 2009-10 season ranked third, their highest-ever season-opening ranking, but fell out of the polls midway through the season and returned to the top 15, Nov. 22, 2010. Stout was in the 2011-12 USCHO.com poll early in the season, dropped out, returned again, but dropped out. Stout returned to the poll after a win over top-ranked St. Norbert, Jan. 18, garnering eight votes in the Jan. 21 poll, effectively ranking the Blue Devils 19th. |

UP NEXT: The final Peters Cup series (the NCHA playoff tournament) will commence Friday, Feb. 15 and Saturday, Feb. 16 with a quarterfinal series. The semifinal of the Peters Cup will be Saturday, Feb. 23 and the championship game will be Saturday, March 1. The Peters Cup champion receives the automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament.
