Hockey Preview: Watkins to coach his 700th career game tonight

THIS WEEK'S GAME: The Blue Devils (2-7-0, 0-0-0 WIAC)  will travel to fourth ranked UW-Stevens Point (9-0-0, 1-0-0 WIAC), Saturday, Dec. 7 at 7 p.m.

700 CLUB: Tonight's game will mark UW-Stout head coach Terry Watkins' 700th game coaching a Blue Devil hockey team. Coach Watkins is in the midst of his 18th season as head coach of the Blue Devil varsity program. Coach Watkins worked eight years with the Blue Devils club hockey team, returning the program to varsity status for the 1996-97season. Watkins played for the Blue Devils during his college days and was a member of one of the most prolific scoring lines in team history. Throughout his playing and coaching career at UW-Stout, Watkins has rubbed shoulders with more than 500 UW-Stout hockey players.

WEBCASTS:  All UW-Stout home games are scheduled to be broadcast in a live video stream by Blue Devil Video. Brady Burzynski and Josh Halling will be on the call throughout the season.  Live Stats should also be available for most home games.

THE 2013-14 BLUE DEVILS (2-7-0, 0-1-0 WIAC): Kevin O'Donnell leads Stout with six goals and five assists O'Donnell has worked his way onto the UW-Stout all-time career scoring list. His 79 total points (34-45-79) ranks him 20th, tied with Brandon Gay, his 34 goals rank him 24th, tied with Nate Legler, and his 45 assists rank him 15th. Craig Lindegard and Danny Ray each have three goals and one assist.  Matt Millis and Justin Moody each have two goals and two assists. Tyler Cayemberg, Logan Maly, Shayne McLaughlin and Justin Tredinnick each have one goal and two assists. Jake Useldinger and Zach Vierling each have three assists and Vierling iced his first goal of the season against River Falls..  Eighteen different players have scored at least one point and 13 players have scored at least one goal. SPECIAL TEAMS: The Blue Devils have scored seven power play goals, second only to UW-Stevens Point in the WIAC, going 7-of-34 (20.6 percent). Kevin O'Donnell has two power play goals. Craig Lindegard, Danny Ray, Matt Millis, Justin Moody and Logan Maly each have a power play goal.  Stout is in the middle of the pack in penalty kill, allowing five goals in 48 opportunities (10.4 percent). Stout also has two shorthanded goals. Moody and Nolan Kirley have the two shorthanded goals.

STOUT'S LAST TIME OUT: Stout scored two goals in the final two minutes of regulation to force overtime, but UW-River Falls scored 1:29 into the overtime period to defeat the Blue Devils, 5-4, Thursday  | UW-River Falls Story and Box Score

SCOUTING UW-RIVER FALLS (4-1-1, 0-0-0 WIAC): With the exception of a 6-2 win over Bethel, all of the Falcons' wins or losses have been by one goal. The Falcons hold a 3.0-2.0 advantage in scoring per game. Wilie Hess and Ryan Doner each have seven points, Hess has six goals and one assit. Doner has two goals and matches Tayler Burden with five assists. Blake Huppert has two goals and three assists. Scott Lewan has worked four games and is posting a 2.46 goals against average and saves percentage of .908. THE SERIES: The Falcons hold a distinct 66-20-1 lead in the series.

SCOUTING UW-STEVENS POINT (9-0-0, 1-0-0 WIAC): The Pointers are the top-ranked scoring team in Division III, putting up a gaudy 6.25 goals per game and were ranked fourth in the latest USCHO.com Division II poll and second in the latest D3hockey.com Top 15.  Four Pointers lead the WIAC in scoring.  Garrett Ladd leads the way with 10 goals and nine assists. Ladd is ranked fourth in DIII in scoring.  Kyle Brodie has four goals and six assists. Joe Kaisz has five goals nd four assists and Scott Henegar has three goals nd six assists. Eleven players have scored two or more goals and 23 players have scored points this season. Brandon Jaeger has played all but one game in goal, posting a 1.57 goals against average and a save percentage of .919.  The Pointers have outscored their opponents, 50-11.  |  2013-14 Statistics

THE SERIES: Stout holds a 38-30-3 lead in the series.

LAST TIME THEY MET: The Pointers took all three contests last season, starting off with an 8-0 smackdown on Dec. 7, 2013, but Stout bounced back, only to lose the next night, 4-3, in overtime. USCHO.com POLL: UW-River Falls is receiving votes in the latest poll, while UW-Stevens Point is currently ranked fourth.  Other Blue Devil opponents in the poll: Eau Claire (7th); St. Norbert (2nd); St. Thomas (8th); Oswego (13th),; St. Scholastica (10th); Augsburg (15th).  Concordia-Moorhead is receiving votes.

RECORDS AND MILESTONES: Kevin O'Donnell has worked his way onto the UW-Stout all-time career scoring list. His 76 total points (32-44-76) ranks him 20th, tied with Brandon Gay, his 32 goals rank him 24th, tied with Nate Legler, and his 44 assists rank him 15th.Thirty career goals is the cutoff to appear on the UW-Stout all-time goals list.

AWARDS AND HONORS: Kevin O'Donnell was a first team all-WIAC selection last season; Jordan Tredinnick and Zach Vierling honorable mention all-WIAC.

TEAM CAPTAINS: Logan Maly is the team captain, while Kevin O'Donnell and Zach Vierling are assistant captains for the 2013-14 season.

THE COACHES: UW-Stout:  Terry Watkins (209-239-28) is in his 18th season as the head coach of the Blue Devils' varsity program. Watkins spent eight years coaching the club team (104-102-16) as Stout prepared to return to varsity status in 1997. Watkins was the 2006-07 NCHA coach of the year when Stout finished in a three-way tie for first. Watkins had a Hall of Fame career at Stout as a defenseman. Stout won a WIAC title in 2010-11, and an NCHA title during the 2006-07 season. Watkins is closing in on 700 games as the head coach of a UW-Stout hockey team (varsity and club). UW-River Falls:.The WIAC leader in all-time wins, Steve Freeman is in his18th season as the head coach of the Falcons. Ten times Freeman has won coach of the year honors.  UW-Stevens Point:  Chris Brooks is in his third year as the Pointers' head coach and last year led the team to the conference tournament championship game.

THE CONFERENCES: Stout is a member of the five team Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). The WIAC is made up of Stout, UW-Eau Claire, UW-Stevens Point, UW-Superior and UW-River Falls.

2012-13 BLUE DEVILS (10-13-2, 5-13-0 NCHA): After a hot start to the season, Stout finished the 2012-13 season with a 10-15-2 overall record, 5-13-0 in their last season in the NCHA and 2-10-0 in the WIAC.   | 2012-13 Statistics

STOUT'S RANKED HISTORY: Stout finished the 2008-09 season as the second ranked team in the USCHO.com poll. With the exception of the Nov. 17, 2008, USCHO.com poll, Stout had been ranked in the top 15 since the Nov. 13, 2006, poll. Stout made their first appearance in the poll on Nov. 27, 2000, when they received one vote, then moved up to 10th the following week. The 2008-09 season ending poll matched Stout's previous high mark of second  in the Jan. 29, 2007, poll. Stout opened the 2009-10 season ranked third, their highest-ever season-opening ranking, but fell out of the polls midway through the season and returned to the top 15, Nov. 22, 2010. Stout was in the 2011-12 USCHO.com poll early in the season, dropped out, returned again, but  dropped out. Stout returned to the poll after a win over top-ranked St. Norbert, Jan. 18, garnering eight votes in the Jan. 21 poll, effectively ranking the Blue Devils 19th. | USCHO.com Division III poll

UP NEXT: After opening WIAC play Dec. 5 and 7, Stout will be off until they travel east to the state of New York when they will play in the Pathfinder Bank/Oswego State Classic in January. Stout will meet Utica College, Saturday, Jan. 3, then will meet either Oswego or Curry State the following day.
