O'Donnell hits game-winning penalty shot in 4-3 OT season opener

MENOMONIE (October. 26, 2013) - Kevin O'Donnell (Sr, Stoughton) scored on a penalty shot with 22 seconds remaining in overtime to give UW-Stout a 4-3 come-from-behind win over Marian University in the season opener for both teams Saturday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.

With the score tied at 3-3, O'Donnell came across the crease, was tripped and was awarded the shot. O'Donnell sliced the shot right through the five-hole to score his second goal of the night.

The Blue Devils were playing catch-up all night. Marian (0-1-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a pair of goals by Tyler Klein within the first five minutes of the game.

Stout (1-0-0) thought they had cut the lead in half when Patrick Regan (Jr, Edina, Minn) put the puck across the line, but the goal was waved off on an offside call. Stout got the goal back when Matt Milis (Jr, Black River Falls) scored at10:36 in the period.

The Sabres jumoed out to a 3-1 lead with five minutes left in the first period when Tanner Burton scored on a 4-on-3 opportunity.

The Blue Devils tied the score with a pair of power play goals in the second period. Logan Maly (Sr, Rio) about two minutes into the period and O'Donnell scored his first goal of the game to tie the game at 11:14 of the second.

Both teams have opportunities in the overtime period, with Marian getting three OT shots on net and Stout  four.

The puck was flying fast and furious all night. stout put 53 shots on frame, while Marian put 37. Corey Koop (Fr, Squamish, BC) got his first collegiate win by making 34 saves. Josh Baker took the loss with 49 saves.

Stout will host Lake Forest College, Friday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m.
