MENOMONIE (January 5, 2013) - Kevin O'Donnell (Jr, Stoughton) scored the game winning goal with 33 seconds left in overtime to lift UW-Stout to a 5-4 win over Hamline University Saturday at the Dunn County Ice Arena.
After relinquishing a 3-1 lead to the winless Pipers (0-13-2), Stout (8-5-2) tied the score with six minutes to play when
Sam Carr (Sr, Roseau, Minn) took the assists from
Logan Maly (Jr, Rio) and
Joe Beaudette (Sr, Blaine, Minn.). O'Donnell's goal came on an assist from
Zach Vierling (So, Coon Rapids, Minn.).
After 11 minutes of scoreless play to open the game, Brandon Zurn put Hamline up, 1-0 with his first of two goals on the night. Stout answered back, however, and goals by
Jordan Tredinnick (So, Onalaska) and Beaudette gave the Blue Devils a 2-1 advantage through one period.
Beaudette got his second goal of the night just over a minute into the second period to give Stout a 3-1 lead. Tredinnick and Carr were credited with the assists on the goal, the only one of the second stanza.
But Hamline didn't fold.
Just as everyone thought they were headed towards another blowout loss, Hamline mustered up a comeback, and were able to take the lead. Zurn scored his second goal of the night, five minutes into the third period, and two minutes later, Joe Rubbelke scored a power play goal to knot the score at three apiece. Cameron Stowers kept the momentum going, scoring the go-ahead goal less than a minute later, and the Pipers held a lead with 10 minutes to play.
Four Blue Devils had multiple points on the night, led by Beaudette, who had three.
Stout escaped with the win despite being outshot, 45-23.
Nick Hopper (Sr, Culver City, Calif.) finished with 41 saves while his counterpart, Nick Heimer, finished with 18.
Stout will host UW-River Falls for two games, Friday, Jan. 11, and Saturday, Jan. 12. Both games are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Dunn County Ice Arena.
