Falcons score three in the first to give Blue Devils a loss

RIVER FALLS (January 31, 2013) - UW-River Falls scored three first period goals and made the trifecta stand up as the Falcons handed UW-Stout a 3-0 loss at Hunt Arena Thursday.

The Falcons' Adam Cardwell scored four minutes into the game, then Blake Huppert and Mike Williams scored, Huppert on the power play, in the final five minutes of the first period.

The two teams combined for 21 penalties, with only the Falcons (11-8-3, 4-8-3 NCHA) taking advantage on the power play. River Falls was 1-for-3 on the power play and Stout was 0-for-6. Stout (10-10-2, 5-10-0 NCHA) had 27 total minues of penalties, while the Falcons tallied 26.

The Blue Devils outshot the Falcons, 34-26. Blue Devil goalie Nick Hopper (Sr, Culver City, Calif) made 23 saves, while the Falcons' Scott Lewan made 34 saves.

The Blue Devil loss allowed the Falcons to jump ahead  of Stout in the NCHA standings. Stout is currently in sixth in the NCHA. The Falcons completed a three game sweep over Stout.

Stout will host UW-Eau Claire, Friday, Feb. 1, while the Falcons will face Eau Claire, Saturday, Feb. 2.
