MENOMONIE (January 11, 2013) - UW-Stout erased an early two-goal deficit, but could never grab a lead of their own as they fell, 4-2, Friday night at the Dunn County Ice Arena, in the first game of a weekend series with UW-River Falls.

Garrett Grimstad (Sr, Rochester, Minn.) and Mike Hartviksen (Jr, Thunder Bay, Ont.) scored the two goals that knotted the game at two apiece before River Falls' Adam Cardwell scored the decisive goal with seven minutes to play in the game.

The Falcons (9-5-2, 2-5-2 NCHA) grabbed a two-goal lead in the first period with goals from Alex Murphy and Willie Hess. Murphy scored eight minutes into the game and Hess added his goal after penalties by Charles Lachance (Quebec City, QC) and Kevin O'Donnell (Jr, Stoughton) left the Blue Devils (8-6-2, 3-6-0 NCHA) on the wrong end of a 5-on-3 situation.

Stout battled back, using the second period to play catch up. Grimstad scored a power play goal, five minutes into the second period and Hartviksen snuck one in 39 second before the buzzer. Grimstad got an assist on Hartviksen's goal and now has 15 points on the season. Stout out-shot River Falls, 26-6 in the period.

Entering the third period tied 2-2, it was anybody's game. Stout got an early power play opportunity, but could not convert, attempting just two shots in the two-minute advantage. With seven mintues to play in the tie game, the teams were called for coincidentals, inducing a 4-on-4 situation. Cardwell scored his goal with 6:55 showing on the scoreboard and Stout was not able to muster another comeback. Cardwell added an empty net goal in the waning seconds to complete the scoring, dealing Stout their first home loss of the season.

Nick Hopper (Sr, Culver City, Calif.) absorbed just his second loss of the year and recorded 18 saves on the night. Scott Lewan recorded 46 saves as he was abused by the Blue Devils, especially in the second and third periods.

Stout will get their chance at redemption tomorrow night, as they welcome the Falcons back to the Dunn County Ice Arena for a 7 p.m. matchup.
