Young tennis Blue Devils defeat Dubuque, 5-4

DUBUQUE, Iowa (September 1, 2012) - The UW Stout women's tennis team defeated the University of Dubuque, 5-4,.Saturday in the season opener.

Stout's freshman Janessa Poirer went extra in the first set (7-6) at No. 6 singles, then took the second set, 6-2. Returners Elizabeth Lehnertz, and Emily Grossen both had three sets wins, Grossen at No. 2 singles 6-4, 4-6, 10-7, and Lehnertz at No. 4, 5-7, 6-1, 10-6.

The Blue Devils took two doubles wins to set set the stage for the team win. Grossen and Kelsey Pedersen took an 8-3 No. 2 win and Elizabeth Burda and Emily Gawronski at 9-8 win at No. 3 doubles. The No. 1 team of Abby Cornelius and Molly Denney were edged, 9-8.

The win marked the first career win for first year coach Erin Konsela on a team that includes only two returners.

The Blue Devils open the WIAC season Wednesday, Sept. 5 when they host UW-Eau Claire at 3:30 p.m
