EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (May 4, 2012) - UW-Stout was only able to get four hits as they were dropped, 8-0, by UW-River Falls in their first game of the WIAC Softball Championsips at Gelein Field.
The Falcons (26-12), who were deemed the home team at the neutral site, grabbed an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. They extended that lead to five in the bottom of the second while Stout (20-12) had yet to get a hit.
The bats heated up a bit in the third inning and the Blue Devils mounted their biggest threat of the game.
Sammy Peterson (Sr, Hudson) led off the inning with a double, but was doubled up on the following batter, leaving the bases empty with two outs.
Courtney Richardson (So, Miltona, Minn.) followed with a single, and moved to third on an
Erin Moss (Jr, Munster, Ind.) double. Both runners were left stranded, however, and Stout remained five runs back.
The Blue Devils' only other hit came in the fifth inning when Peterson got her second of the day, a single to left field. She finished 2-for-2. Amanda Ryder went 3-for-3 for the Falcons including a solo shot in the fourth inning.
Laura Vanderhoof (So, Mankato, Minn.) was saddled with the loss, going two innings, allowing five earned runs on five hits. She also walked two batters and struck out three. Her couterpart, Rose Tusa, pitched all six innings, striking out three Blue Devils.
Stout will face top-seeded UW-Eau Claire tomorrow, May 5, at 10 a.m.
