MENOMONIE (April 6, 2012) -
Laura Vanderhoof (So, Mankato, Minn) recorded the save in the first game, then pitched a complete game win and
Courtney Richardson (So, Miltona, Minn) twice plated
Alison Gray (Jr, St. Cloud, Minn) with the eventual game winning runs in both games as UW-Stout swept UW-Platteville, 5-2, 3-1, in the Blue Devils' conference opener Friday at Alumni Field.
Coming off a 10-strikeout performance on Tuesday,
Tara Kimberly (Sr, Baldwin) got the start for the Blue Devils in the opener and struck out five, but left with the score tied at 2 apiece in the fifth inning.
But the Blue Devils (12-10, 2-0 WIAC) offense made Kimberly the winner with a three-run outburst in the bottom of the fifth. Gray led off the fifth with a single, then stole second. Richardson brought her home with a shot to left center. The Blue Devils took advantage of a pair of Pioneer errors to score two more runs in the inning.
Vanderhoof came on to shut down the Pioneers (13-11, 3-3 WIAC) in order in the sixth, surrendered a pair of hits, but no runs, in the seventh inning.
Kimberly finished with five strikeouts and neither pitcher game up a walk or hit a batter.
The second game had a similar game-ending scenario.
The Pioneers tied the score in the fifth inning at 1-1. Stout stranded two in the fifth inning, then Vanderhoof got out of a base-loaded jam in the top of the sixth, setting the scene for the bottom half of the inning.
Again, Gray reached on a single, this time an infield single, then stole second, setting the table to Richardson's game-winning RBI, a single where she advanced to second on the throw to the plate. Richardson would eventually score when she moved on
Hannah Sweet's groundout, then scored on
Sammy Peterson's (Sr, Hudson) sacrifice fly. Vanderhoof shut the Pioneers down in order.
Vanderhoof recorded three strikeouts and scattered six hits and gave up a pair of walks.
On the day, Richardson was 2-for-3 in both games. Richardson and Platteville's Chantal McReynolds were the only players to record two hits in the second game.
In the first game, Stout's
Erin Moss (Jr, Munster, Ind), Richardson and Peterson had two hits. The Pioneers' Jordan Johnson was the only Pioneer to notch more than one hit., getting two.
Stout will be at UW-Eau Claire, Thursday, April 12 sy 4 p.m., then will host UW-Superior, Sunday, April 15 at 1 p.m.
