Big third inning gives Stout split with Pointers

STEVENS POINT (April 28, 2012) - UW-Stout used a four-run third inning in the second game to work their way to a split with UW-Stevens Point Saturday on a blustery afternoon.

After giving up a run in the bottom of the 10th inning to drop the opening game 2-1, the Blue Devils (15-20, 5-8 WIAC) put that game behind them and scored in the first three innings of the second game to take a 7-0 lead and went on for a 7-1 win to earn the split.

Hannah Sweet (So, Elk River, Minn) drove in a run in the first, put the Pointers down in order in the bottom of the first, then picked up two runs in the second when Erin Moss (Jr, Munster, Ind) scored on a wild pitch. Jessica Behnke (So, Bruce), who reached on an error, came home on Courtney Richardson's (So, Miltona, Minn) single.

The Blue Devils stacked up four runs in the third, Alison Gray (Jr, St. Cloud, Minn) opened with a single, then moved to third on Sweet's double. Workman plated Gray. Sam Hastings (So, Waukesha) drove in a run, then eventually came around to score on a double steal with Behnke. Jessica Nicol (Jr, Eau Claire) drove in Behnke to complete the scoring.

The Pointers (14-23, 3-12 WIAC) scored their only run of the game in the bottom of the third. Laura Vanderhoof (So, Mankato, Minn) went five innings to get the win, allowing four hits and striking out two. Denise Sawdey (Fr, Medford) made her first career appearance in the circle and threw the final two innings, not allowing a hit.

Stevens Point's Paige Mueleman hit a home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Pointers a 2-1 win over Stout in the first game.

Stout scored their only run of the game on Gray's RBI double in the third inning and held the lead until the seventh inning.

In the sixth inning, Tara Kimberly (Sr, Baldwin) come on in relief and pitched out of a bases-loaded jam when Sammy Peterson (Sr, Hudson) threw out a runner at the plate for the second out of the inning. Kimberly pitched a strikeout to get out of the inning unscathed.

But the Pointers tied the score in the bottom of the seventh, then won the game in the 10th.

Vanderhoof started the game, pitching 5.1 innings of scoreless ball. Kimberly was saddled with the loss while striking out six.

Stout will host UW-La Crosse, Sunday, April 29 at 1 p.m., then will close the regular season, Tuesday, May 1 by hosting Hamline University at 4 p.m.
