UW-Whitewater 14, UW-Stout 8
WHITEWATER (April 21, 2012) - The first game was more of a pitchers' duel, the second a hitters' game, but the result were the same as UW-Whitewater swept a pair of games from UW-Stout Saturday, 3-2, 14-8.
In the opener, UW-Stout (14-16, 4-6 WIAC) scored in the first and seventh innings, but UW-Whitewater (25-5, 8-0 WIAC) got just enough in between to defeat the Blue Devils 3-2 in the first game of the doubleheader Saturday.
Alison Gray (Jr, St. Cloud, Minn) hit a two-out double in the first inning, then came home on
Hannah Sweet's (So, Elk River, Minn) to give Stout a 1-0 lead, a lead they held until the fourth inning when Whitewater's Emily Epifiano tied the score with a solo home run.
Laura Eichold unloaded a two-run double in the fifth inning to give the Warhawks a 3-1 lead.
Stout's
Jessica Behnke (So, Bruce) hit her first career home run in the seventh inning to pull the Blue Devils to within 3-2, but the final two batters flied out. Behnke was 2-for-3 to lead Stout.
In the second game, Stout took the lead in the first inning on
Erin Moss' (Jr, Munster, Ind) RBI single, driving in
Courtney Richardson (So, Miltona, Minn), who led off the game with a double.
But the 15th ranked Warhawks exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the second inning, sending 12 batters to the plate. Stout immediately responded with four runs in the top of the third. Gray sliced an RBI single, freshman
Taylor Workman (Prior Lake, Minn) drove in two runs witha single and
Sam Hastings (So, Waukesha) had a sacrifice fly.
Stout added two more runs in the top of the fourth to pull to within 8-7 when Moss hit a two-run home run, her second as a Blue Devils
It was just about all Warhawks after that as Whitewater scored one run in the fourth, three in fifth and two in the sixth. Stout's Sweet added a solo home run in the seventh to close out the scoring.
Moss finished the game hitting 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. Richardson scored three runs and was 2-for-3.
Paige Evangelista had two home runs for the Warhawks, going 2-for-5 with five RBI. Kelly McGrail was 3-for-3 with three RBI and Morgan Krisch was 2-for-3 with three RBI.
Stout will be at UW-Oshkosh, Sunday, April 22 and at Carleton College, Tuesday, April 25.
