MENOMONIE (April 17, 2012) - Jessica Nicol (Jr, Eau Claire) slashed a walk off double to score Hannah Sweet (So, Elk River, Minn) to give UW-Stout a 5-4, 11-inning, second game win over UW-Superior Tuesday to earn the split.

The Blue Devils (13-13, 3-3 WIAC) smacked out 14 hits in the second game, a big contrast to the one hit they recorded in an 11-0, five inning opening game loss.

After seeing the Yellowjackets (8-14, 2-6 WIAC) tie the game in the fifth with a sinlge run, then take a lead, it was Stout doing hitting the comeback road late and in extra innings.

Superior jumped out to 3-2 lead with a pair of runs in the seventh inning. Alison Gray (Jr, St. Cloud, Minn) drew a two out walk in the seventh, then moved to second on a wild pitch. Freshman Taylor Workman (Prior Lake, Minn) doubled to left field to bring Gray home and tie the score and extend the game.

Neither team scored in the eighth and ninth, but Stout answered the call in the bottom of the 10th. Superior had taken a 4-3 lead on Kayla Anderson's single in the top of the inning. The Blue Devils utilized a couple of Superior mistakes to tie the contest. With one out, Sam Hastings (So, Waukesha) reached safely on an error, the advanced to second on Courtney Richardson's (So, Miltona, Minn) single. Richardson was forced out on Gray's fielder's choice, but the double play attempt turned into disaster for the Yellowjackets when the ball was thrown away, allong Hastings to score for second with the tying run.

Laura Vanderhoof (So, Mankato, Minn), who had come on in relief in the sixth inning, allowed a walk and a sacrifice bunt to get a runner at second,, but got a third out fly out to deep center field to end the threat.

Sweet opened the bottom of the inning with a single, then made it around the diamond when Nicol's shot to center field went to the fence past a diving centerfielder to give Stout the win.

Jessica Behnke (So, Bruce) had a stellar game at the plate for the Blue Devils, going 3-for-4 after not playing in the opener. Erin Moss (Jr, Munster, Ind), who had Stout's only hit in the opening game, had two hits, as did Workman and Sweet.

The Yellowjackets' LIndsay Garay, who was saddled with the loss after coming on in the 11th inning, was 3-for-6.

In the opener, Superior pitcher Amanda Le Bard had command of the board, allowing the one hit, walking one and striking out four. In addition to the five inning first game, Le Bard worked through the 10th inning, but did not figure into the decision.

Stout will host UW-River Falls, Wednesday, April 18 at 4 p.m.
