EAU CLAIRE (April 12, 2012) - UW-Eau Claire used a pair of big first innings to propel their way to a sweep of conference games over UW-Stout Thursday at Carson Park.
The Blugolds scored three runs in the first inning of the opener for a 3-0 win, then tallied five runs in the first inning of the nightcap for a 9-3 second game win.
UW-Eau Claire's Emily Muller hit a three-run home run in the first inning of the opener to give the home team all the runs of the game.
Stout stranded four runners, with only one runner advancing past second base. Stout left single runners on in the second, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
The Blue Devils best scoring chance came in the fourth inning when
Sam Hastings (So, Waukesha) hit a lead-off single, then moved to second on
Courtney Richardson's (So, Miltona, Minn) groundout.
Alison Gray (Jr, St. Cloud, Minn) advanced Hastings to third with a single to left field, but the inning ended in a double play.
Stout tallied three hits to the Blugolds' six.
Tara Kimberly (Sr, Baldwin) took the loss for the Blue Devils, going the distance and striking out four. Emma Wishau got the win for Eau Claire, striking out five.
In the nightcap, a three-run home run by the Blugolds' Nikki Bromelkamp padded a two run lead and Stout was not able to recover.
Sammy Peterson (Sr, Hudson) hit a solo home run in the top of the second, but the Blugolds jumped out a 7-1 lead with two runs in the third inning when Bromelkamp plated a pair of runs with a double.
Hastings lifted a solo home run in the fourth inning, but the Blugolds matched that run with a run in the bottom of the stanza. Blue Devil pitcher
Laura Vanderhoof (So, Mankato, Minn) drove in a run in the fifth, but again the Blugolds matched the run when Bromelkamp drove in her sixth run of the game for the final 9-3 score.
Stout left two runners on in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Vanderhoof started the game, but was knocked out in the first inning and absorbed the loss. She returned to the circle in the fourth inning.
Peterson was the only Blue Devil to collect more than one hit in the game, going 2-for-2 with two runs scored.
Bromelkamp was 3-for-3 and Ashley Fern was 3-for-4 for the Blugolds.
Stout will host UW-Superior, Sunday, April 15 at 1 p.m., then will host UW-River Falls, Wednesday, April 18 at 4 p.m.
