DECORAH, Iowa (April 1, 2012) - After dropping a five-inning contest to fifth ranked Luther College, the UW-Stout softball team fell just short to the Norse in the second game in a doubleheader Sunday.
The Norse (19-3) took the first contest, 13-1, in five innings on the eight run rule, then scored the game winning run in the bottom of the sixth for a 4-3 win over the Blue Devils.
In the nightcap, the Blue Devils (8-10) served notice with a two-run first inning when
Sam Hastings (So, Waukesha) smashed a lead-off home run, her second of the season. Stout doubled the score when
Erin Moss (Jr, Munster, Ind) scored on a wild pitch after reaching on a single.
Luther pulled ahead with three runs in the bottom of the first on a three-run blast by Abby Christian.
Stout tied the score in the third inning when
Alison Gray (Jr, St. Cloud, Minn) led off with a double, then moved to third on
Courtney Richardson's (So, Miltona, Minn) single. The pair executed the double steal, with Gray coming home.
Luther scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth on back-to-back doubles by Christian and Kelsey Weindruch.
Stout was done in in the opener by a nine-run second and a four-run fourth inning.
Stout will host Northwestern College, Tuesday, April 3 at 4 p.m.
