Softball gets Florida sweep over New York schools

Blue Devil pitchers Kimberly, Vanderhoof tally 18 strikeouts on the day

CLERMONT, Fla (March 14, 2012) - UW-Stout picked up their first sweep of the season when they downed a pair of New York state schools at the National Training Center College Spring Games Wednesday.

The Blue Devils (6-8) defeated Manahattanville College, 4-3, to open the day, then came back to down SUNY-Plattsburgh, 7-3.

Courtney Richardson (So, Miltona, Minn) set the tone for the Blue Devils in the win over Plattsburgh with a lead-off home run.

The Cardinals scored a single run in the bottom of the first to tie the game, then went ahead with a pair of runs in the second. Stout pulled to within one run when Erin Moss (Jr, Munster, Ind) drove in Sam Stout (So, La Crosse) with a double.

Moss came up big again in the seventh, driving in two runs with a double to right center to put Stout in the lead. Sam Hastings (So, Waukesha) slashed a double to score Moss. Taylor Workman (Fr, Prior Lake, Minn) drove in a pair of insurance runs later in the inning.

Laura Vanderhoof (So, Mankato, Minn) went the distance, striking out eight and allowing one walk.

In the opener, Manhattanville scored one in the first inning, but the Blue Devils took the lead with a three run outburst. Moss cracked off an RBI double, then came home on Hastings' line shot. Hastings scored on Richardson's double.

The Valiants tied the score with two runs in the fourth. Stout got the game winner in the sixth inning. Hannah Sweet (So, Elk River, Minn) led off the inning with a single. Richardson moved pinch runner Jessica Behnke (So, Bruce) to third with a double and Behnke scored the game winner on a passed ball.

Tara Kimberly (Sr, Baldwin) grabbed the win, strking out 10 and walking none, while scattering six hits.

The Blue Devils have won four of their last five games and have outscored their opponents 25-9 during that stretch.
